well the semester is finally over for me and i can do some much needed work on my car this summer. the first thing im having done is a front engine reseal and timing belt. I want to replace the TB tensioner assy, but i know that at some point in 1997, Subaru switched over from a 2 piece tensioner assy to a 1 piece assy for the BD. Unfortunately, even with my mfg date (05-97) and my VIN #, my local Subaru parts dealer was unable to tell me for sure which one my car has  (they think i need the newer, 1 piece assy but said theyre not 100% sure). Do any of you guys know which one my car is likely to have? thanks.

You probably should just pop off the timing cover and have a looksie. I've definately learned not to trust any kind of information others give me in regards to parts on my car because it is a "transition time" made car. It'd just be safer to look yourself.

FWIW, I've done my timing belt 3 times now (once was routine + crank seal replace, 2nd was because first time I didn't get timing right, 3 was waterpump replacement) and I reused the tensioner each time. I have the older style and what I did was compressed it in a vice over the period of 15-20 minutes. The manual calls for 7 minutes or longer.
