Had constant stream of bubbles in expansion bottle, only happened when it was warmed up but was expecting HG problem. I was just contemplating when would be the best time to pull the engine when i had a mini brainwave! what if it was simply a weak rad cap? so i put a new one on and hey presto!

cured, well i thought it was, of course a few days later im driving along and the temp needle shoots up for no reason, damn! HG after all i thought but nope, lady luck must have been smiling that day.

turned out that i had a very small weep in the bottom corner of the rad, (I knew about this but didnt think it was enough to worry about) anyway what happened is th enew cap had gien the system more pressure, thisin turn had forced more water out the leak until it got that low that the water must have dropped below the level of the sender and made the gauge go up.

so £4.99 for a cap and £75 for a new radiator and all cured. just thought id share that with you as it might just save someone the task of needlessly changing head gaskets.

It also had a little spell of idling strangely but the next day it was fine, i dont know what that was as it never happened again!

Great info, i think you might already solved the problem for someone else.

Hope I have, I would really, really have kicked myself if I had pulled the engine out and changed the gaskets only to find it was still doing it!!

on avg where does everyones temp needle sit on the gauge? mine is sitting at half, and for some reason i feel this is too high, most of my cars been sitting at 1/4 and from what i hear and see at work the thermostat is a 70deg C. unit so i would figure it would run at a lower temp right? i think i may have a cooling issue as well.

also how long does it take for your 2.5's to warm up? mine is fairly quick with in not even a full KM of driving

Mine sits bang on halfway. Most cars read a bit low prob because the sender is getting old. I always put a new sender in a car if it doesnt read h alfway and it very often puts it right. not always of course.

Mine reads at half. My toyota did too until I put a lower temp thermostat in as I was having overheating issues on the highway.

Half. I asked subaru, they said that is where it needs to be.

Btw, if your temp. needle goes past the H, that is a good way to know if it is HG's.
