It's not really a major issue or anything (i hope not anyways), but I have always noticed that my clutch is somewhat jerky (especially down shifting) when it engages no matter how carefully I let it out.

My current car is the very first stick shift i have ever had, so I am not exactly an expert or anything. However my friend lets me drive his WRX from time to time and I have no problems at all shifting down smoothly.

Is this just a typical cheap clutch or is there something else going on here?

either the pressure plate is engaging unevenly or the release bearing is sticking

How many miles and years are on the car? Jerky driveline engagement can be a result of not just worn out clutch components, but also tranny/motor mounts.
