Can I use my primary turbo on my EJ20 for a single turbo conversion. Will it be able to handle it. I dont know much about turbos, but I keep hearing that from a performance standpoint, I would get a lot more out of my engine if it was a single turbo. One thing I hate is the "dead spot" between 3500-5000 rpm. How hard is it to do the single turbo conversion. Thanks in advance for the info.

The single turbo conversion is a little tough to do because of the ECU - but there are a few guys on www.clubsub.org.nz (http://www.clubsub.org.nz) that have done it.

You do NOT want to use the tiny primary turbo for your single conversion - it'll run out of puff way too early.

To get rid of the VOD (Valley of Death) lag between the two turbos, try this very simple mod - improve the electrical grounding system on your car. The cable used for grounding is pretty weak, and after 11 years it needs a refresher.

Another solution is to de-cat the primary downpipe (if you haven't done that already). And install a cold-air intake (but keep the stock airbox) - just install a pipe that attaches to the stock airbox and extends down into the fender.

Try that - the grounding mod has been proven by several clubsub members... if you can find him, a member called QWERTY on that site has it well documented (back to back dyno runs).

i would also do the grounding mod. you can make it yourself. its in the DIY forum, or just buy one. apexi or buddy club make some good ones. also you could get a boost controller and tweek your turbos to do what you want. tomei makes a high flow downpipe for ej20's. im not to sure if it is for single or twin.

those are some tomei sites. since your over there it will be easier for you to get them than us over here.

grounding info. above.

hope some of this helps

Or you can order a Zero/Sports Sequential controller, i know where to order them from.

Do you have a manual GTB? Or is it just a GT or auto GTB?

Because the manual GTB has the EJ20R, which is basically an EJ20K with two turbo's. In other words, it's an STi engine. the swap is VERY easy on this engine (i just did it myself 2 months ago), and the STi ECU plugs straight in no fuss. The only wiring you need to do is to join about 5 wires (converting it to wasted spark)

I have a full converision guide written up on it if you want.

Way to go Reuben... I am not to far of now.... I'll be ripping into it, I brought JCRSB twisted rage setup, RIPEVO couldn't complete and will pick up his rails and ECU for my change over... Turbo hunt is on for TD05 I'll pay Steve Murch to look at, thoughts of a 20g wheel on it with a 8cm trust turbine hsg may be the way to get the 230 - 250kw @tw

I am thinking of pulling the hole engine out so I can change HD clutch and get the lite flywheel machined, plus I think converting it from there will be way easier, trying to source a cheapo sump at the moment so I can get PBMS to blaffle it.. lots to do. Turbo is about the only missing part for this conversion, Ironic seeing I started out with with 2 T3/T4 turbos and now have none......
---------------------------------------------------------------

Best mod you can ever do... dude .. all the rest that mentioned on here... earthing cables, cat less primary exhaust, cold air intake (POD no box) just anchor it well, it's the vibration that kills the AFM. But I've done all the above, the VOD isn't bad, big improvement from standard but some of it is still there.. good luck on your quest... post up some pics...on your conversion if you do be nice to see

Good to hear it's coming along. And you know what goes well with a twisted turbo? A flipped manifold and FMIC :D. About a third the amount of piping as a normal FMIC kit, but you need to do allot of custom work obviously.

yes I have the FMIC already, it was my brothers new old one, New as it's not been used and old as it was for his GC8 which is gone, sold, he now has a Ver 8 Sti. I just painted (wrinkle red) the manifold, I wont flip it at this stage, lets get it done I now say... flipping it may come later. Now wont go to much outside, into the aftermaket bits, until later too. so under Steves advice TD05 with a 18 or 20g and a trust 8cm housing, at least I know the turbo will be sweet.. Fuel rails and ecu I have covered from JCRSB

So it's just the little stuff, bolts clamps, efi hose or connectors for the braided ones I already have. I will get a compression test done before i rip into it, just to see whats what, rebuild is on the cards.. but I want this a single turbo before October.

Probably will need you major expert advice on bits.. If you don't mind

I am getting these twisted exhaust copied, lol sorry, this mans broke especially after my ordeal, I know and engineer company that will look at make the jigs for it, brother works at the steel mill, so cheap mild steel tubing from the creations... should be good only plan to make 5 copies, should work out alright..

How about you Reuben what's next, any other mod on the cards.

Getting the zaust finished, should be picking up the HKS Silent Hi Power today, if it arrives on time.. It was meant to be in yesterday X( then i gotta pay off that nasty loan... Possum bourne motorsport rebuilds aren't the cheapest...

how much was that all, the rebuild including parts.. I sold my closed block, it I rebuild I want stroke it 2.5 crank and same pistons as your 92.5 maybe 93 if its not to much $$$. My wagon has 230km, its not tied but I know it needs to be done, that episode of mine screwed me big time, but with finance it might be all possible add turbo to the cost..

About the FMIC I have not tried it yet, but I have heard a GC8 one works, depending fastfour said his one was sweet, JCRSB said tricky but with work it went in. I hope not to much custom pipe work, but I expect some, seeing it now twisted..
