So I somehow triggered the P0325 CEL code over the weekend (I think it was the rain coming in the scoop)... and after doing some research online I actually located the knock sensor which was hiding under the intake - where it connects to the throttlebody.
Inspection of the knock sensor shows no cracking, no bad wires.
I discovered that in the UK people with 2.0L Impreza's (non turbo only) have had success in moving the sensor to a new location on the block - this is ONLY helpful if the sensor is working correctly, but for whatever reason picks up too much vibration.
So I moved it to a new location (same size bolt hole, now it's sitting up on the part of the block that connects with the transmission), reset the ECU and hey presto...still got the code.
At this point I resigned myself to having to buy a new knock sensor because mine was obviously naffed.
The next day I dropped my car off at a mechanic to get them to quote a wheel bearing repair, and today when I picked it up the CEL was off.
Car ran flawlessly, like a champ - so I can only surmise that it needed a chance to relearn.
