Has anyone built a custom made gauge cluster, with individual gauges? Such as one made from autometer? To replace the stock unit that is.

Thought about it, but then i thought about inspectability with warning lights and what not (ck engine, airbag, etc...)

Good point, is gauge cluster in any way modular? meaning if I wanted to take out the speed and tach I could with a minimum of cutting wires and removing some screws or is it completely hardwired and part of the unit?

Could you use a scan gauge II for picking up CEL?
I've never pulled the gauge cluster out of a subaru, but I know on both nissan and honda they have alot of circuitry that would be a bitch to try and remove parts of the gauges without screwing with a bunch of other stuff

Looks like I'll need a plate or something made to hold the new gauges.
What about using the Scan Gauge for CELs?

I'm pretty sure that you'll have no problems with an aftermarket tach, fuel gauge & water temp should be ok too.
For the speedo you'd just have to make sure that the gauge is compatible with the subaru speed sensor signal.
You will need the various warning lights, but if you're handy with a soldering iron it shouldn't be too hard to duplicate them with LEDs or something.
You might want to try researching what the hotrod guys are doing when they run a new motor (LS series V8, etc).
But yeah, basically you'd have to take out your cluster & remove the shroud & clear plastic front, then chuck the rest. Cut a plate to fit the back of the shroud and drill holes for your gauges & warning lights.
