The condition of most plays a big part... The condition of a lot of BG's in NZ is rather depressing. But it seems the current pick on Trade Me (http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/CategoryAttributeSearchResults.aspx?search=1&cid=268&sidebar=1&5=&14=Subaru&15=GT+Manual&18=0&18=0&24=0&24=1998&searchRegion=100) is actually pretty good. There's even a black manual GTB Limited up for sale...

Cleaned Beasts interior up today, since I had an afternoon off.

I WAS going to use this fortnights spending money on some BC GT front brakes for Blighter... But the new catalogue sale at work came out today, and I just couldn't say no to these!

https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/07/IMG_4121-2.jpg

$39NZD a pair! Bloody cheap! Bout time i did something about the sounds in the GTB, has been terribly neglected in that department... Last speakers I got were some bargain bin clearance things for $60 for the whole set, 5 years ago, and they are zip tied in place!

Reuben
07-27-2012, 06:05 AM
SO, today I installed the speakers... And as usually, an hours job took all day!

Old speakers, still in fine condition, 130w, not the gruntiest, they will be perfect in Blighter though! And those zip ties lasted 5 years just fine :P

https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/07/IMG_4122-1.jpg

Then I found rust...

https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/07/IMG_4126-2.jpg

And the cause, this is a fault by design, fucking great.

https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/07/IMG_4127-2.jpg

So went to work and got this shit, and it is the shit. Could see it work in action, turning the rust into black primer before your eyes.

https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/07/IMG_4131-1.jpg

https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/07/IMG_4132-1.jpg

And all along the door... from ALL the staples...

https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/07/IMG_4133-1.jpg

Once it has set, turns blue where there's no rust, and black on the rust.

https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/07/IMG_4134-1.jpg

Painted over the top

https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/07/IMG_4138-1.jpg

And then several layers of electrical tape where the stables rub, in the hope they will take the brunt of it for a few years to come.

https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/07/IMG_4139-2.jpg

https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/07/IMG_4141-2.jpg

New speakers in! And screwed in this time, drilled out holes, then painted the exposed metal

https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/07/IMG_4140-2.jpg

And the old rear speakers that also got replaced :D

https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/07/IMG_4145-1.jpg

And all back together, and ready for another 10 years of faithful service.

https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/07/IMG_4143-2.jpg

And as traditional with beast, post job test drive...

Yeah, about half the late BG's got em. It was optional, if you optioned dual airbags, you also got a different style wheel, and curtan airbags that pop out from the seats too. The limiteds also got explosive pre tentioned seatbelts on top of all that.

More rust killing today. Took the RFRB wing off, that was lacking a nut for a year, and had worn through the paint. I somewhat damaged it taking it off, and now I don't want to put it back on... So looks like this week is the week I get my factory GTB wing painted black, and installed!

Mmmmmmm, dat killed rust.

https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/07/IMG_4170-2.jpg

And in the spots where the top coat had just worn off, but there was still the primer undercoat, I just dabbed the touch up pen over.

https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/07/IMG_4174-1.jpg

Tomorrow, I spray it back to black, and I can start sanding the blue spoiler back, and prime it myself.

They will, strong have MOUNTAINS of BG parts. Will be able to get one the right colour and everything :P

Can't wait to put the subaru wing on, I hate the RFRB one. Was factory optioned with it through, that wing was on beast the day he rolled off the factory floor. I might just keep it for posterity... Hang it on the wall :D

Last coat of paint on my tailgate was ready to be cut/polished and waxed. So took all the masking off and attacked it with microfibre...

In the pics below, you can see the overspray looks kinda matte, and rough. My planning with that was to have a nice spray transition from new paint to old paint, but it failed dramatically... It would go lovely and shiney old paint, to fucked up matte textured fail, to shiney nice new paint.... And from the mighty car mods, I found how to fix this! where the over spray was just a few dots here and there, the clay bar ripped into it no sweat and got rid of it with the smallest amount of rubbing. But the clay bar could only go so far, and it got to the point where I had to wet sand the over spray off, and hopefully not through my clearcoat!

And I gotta say, WOW. I ended up attacking the overspray with wet 1000 grit, and FUCKING my clearcot where there was bad overspray, but, nothing ultimate compound cant fix!!! (Thanks mighty car mods for that tip!) Brought it right back to life, and the result is a beautiful invisible transition from factory paint to new paint!!! It's indredible, I can't believe how well it tuned out! But i'm never doing that shit again... Next time the pro's can do it for me! Way way too easy to fuck up.

So you can see in the first pic, how bad the wet sand fucks up clear coat. It takes A LOT of polishing to get rid of it, I'd say most of my clearcoat in that spot is pretty much gone, and will need to be kept waxed up for the rest of it's life, or it will prerish like the rest of my roof has (which is now beyond saving, only option is respray to fix that).

Reuben
08-02-2012, 07:59 PM
You got a BG/BD/BK? If you do, you have to take the mounts off entirely, fit them LOOSELY, then slide the bar in from the side. You also need to re-route the washer spray hose so it doesn't pinch between the bonnet and bar.

kunchris
08-03-2012, 04:25 AM
i have BG legacy like yours...i had two options one was the carbon STI one, and the other was an aftermarket item..that went over the manifold and my FMIC piping....so the bonnet wouldnt close.
so i settled for the STi brace...
thanks for the advice...i slightly cracked the carbon weave while trying to test fit it...meh. I will need to relocate my FPR also. will update as i go..
your car is source of inspiration for many BG owners. cheers.
(P.S i have been reading that there are two types of these GC8 carbon strut braces...tried searching no proof. people say one is a direct fit and the other needs a lot of modifications..is this true?)

hansvonaxion
08-03-2012, 05:00 AM
I managed to get mine on without taking the ends off but it's tight and needs some patience.

I've seen 3 different variations of the STi bar but afaik they're the same fitment wise.

Reuben

You people are all insane. I reject your realities and substitute my own.

At any rate, got my spoiler back, and the fuckers did a terrible job. They didn't prime it at all, instead left the sanding i did with 220 grit and just painted over it, so of course the lines show through, and there's orange peeling.

Fucking fail. And it cost me $120.

As for the paint... Did they really paint over 220 grit?! Thats just dumb! 320 grit at minimum. However, orange peal is not uncommon. Corvettes over here come factory with a little of it. Post a pic up so I can see how bad...

You know what they say: "If you want a job done right...you've got to do it yourself". And you're more than capable to do it yourself anyway. And that way it only costs you time and effort instead of $120.

Z-town is not a good place to get bodywork done. Too many transients live there and then move on. Great for tourism, sucks for residents.

You'd have to go east or north - take a weekend roadie to Christchurch.

You can make paint from a can look absofuckinglutely perfect. Prime, base, clear, wetsand, polish. 2K clear is available in spray cans these days as well.

You would be amazed at what can be done with a spray can! I'll get some pics of stuff my dad and I have done with spray cans if you dont believe me.

Also, you can get budget stuff... You should have a compressor anyway, with how much you work on your cars. They make life so much easier! Also, you can get cheap spray guns.

Sorry to hear about that stuff... Not cool... :-(

I never send my jobs too paint until they are finished with 800 grit.
Thats a bit much! The paint doesnt have much to grab to. If you are going to just clear something, 600 is just fine. If you are doing base coat and then clear, 400 works. If you are using slear you can get away with 320 on some colors, but 400 is my minimum.

Zac
08-09-2012, 12:18 PM
I work on BMWs and Benz s all day so my work needs to be perfect.

I wouldnt finish below 600 on even a cobalt.

If you use start sanding with any grit below 400 on a silver or gold you'll never get the scratches out.

Even at some shady body shops I've worked at all jobs are prepped too 600 grit.

On literally the third drive with my new skid plate on, it protected my bumper from much damage, as I struck a possum at probably 100-110kph, without ever tapping the brakes. I realised what it was at the last second and decided to forego any pleasantries... Instead I put the guard to good use, and good use it proved to be.

For those that don't know, possums are a pest in NZ, and do a bloody fantastic job of DESTROYING our native forrests and fauna. They also cost our government millions each year in efforts to cull the population. So most kiwi's, like myself, take great glee in smashing their little heads in at any opportunity we can.

May he rest in peace. He died only 50km's from where I live now, have been to his statue many many times, he was man I truly truly looked up to, and who inspired me.

He got the nickname, beacuase in his youth he was taking his mums car for a gravel bash, and swerved to avoid a possum, which ended in him rolling the car several times. Needless to say I'm not interested in repeating the feat!!!

Kinda sad that they are going to be taking his statue away this year in time for the 10th anniversary of his passing, we were going to plan a big subie cruise up to his statue on the day, but looks like those plans are in the air now :(

They are taking the statue to his home town of pukekohe though, which is nice.

Mini update from a few weeks ago:

Little mini update from a few weeks ago.

I got a new jack plate for the beast, since his old one was mangled, and I couldn't bolt the sump guard to it. So went about replacing it, re-mounting my front bumper for the umpteenth time, and re-mounting the sump guard.

https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/09/IMG_4545_zpse8c26846-1.jpg

Turns out the possum bent my guard...

One minute later with my rubber mallet...

And then it all went back together like nothing ever happened :D

Lol how big was the possum? I've started using that point now also since I noticed the other day one of the side points is now bent grumble grumble

Whilst perving at your setup I noticed a new listing on tardme for the same style strut brace, snatched that up :)

Have been keeping my eye hard on subaruspeed for that guard :P love it dude

Next time i'm in qtown/wanaka will definitely have to keep an eye out for blighter/beast

I'm just thinking how much of a mess that possums spine was after it got GTB'd, if that's the damage it managed to do to the car :D

And you'll be lucky to see beast out and about! He has an outing about once ever 2 weeks, if lucky.

I don't mind, as far as I see it, I'm preserving the car beautifully this way.

Dead91silvia

I have had a ton of people ask me how much I'm going to drive my Pulsar or the Volvo when they are finished. When the Pulsar is finished I'm gonna drive the piss out if it! now the Volvo not so much, but it's gutted and does not have any amenity's what so ever, it's a race car, but it will be driven.

I can see wanting to preserve a car's beauty, but I have to drive what ever I have. That being said, the Volvo will most likely rarely or ever see rain or snow. Did too much rust repair to want to clean it up again.

Reuben
10-05-2012, 05:24 PM
Don't worry, when I drive the beast, I don't nip down to the shops, I go and fucking fang it. I can only afford to do that maybe once or twice a month, rest of the time I gotta penny pinch and worry if I can afford food.

Don't forget petrol in NZ costs $2.3NZD/Litre, or $7.1 USD/US Gal.

heavy dose of fill light in lightroom, contrast upped to counter the side effects, and saturation reduced to complement the moody scene. Then added a Gradual Filter to the sky to bring out the mood in that too.

Yesterday my girlfriend and I took beast down to Kingston... To take a ride on the Kingston Flyer!

https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/10/IMG_4869-1.jpg

On the return trip, we didn't want to get out, so blew half a tank going on a wonder to Cromwell and then up to Wanaka, before coming back home via the crown range. Ended up doing some 200km that day for the hell of it...

http://goo.gl/maps/lFJ66

Then today, we had planned a trip out to Haast, and the west coast. So back over the Crown we went, and then did the Haast pass, out to the west coast, before finally stopping at the beach, turning round, and going home. 400km's! Not bad, 600Km's this weekend for no reason other than the love of driving the beast, and 400k's last weekend too to go to the track day in Invercargil! Not a bad effort for a "garage queen"...

Pupy is my mate, sam's. Sams on the right. He's is the worlds best puppy, so well behaved, already trained even!!!

Finished the Laterals install tonight, basically had everything in place last night, all I had to do today was toque everything down, which involves jacking up the strut to the natual neutral/level position, then tightening everything on, kind of importand with the rose joints!!! All back together now, just waiting on the package fromt he states, will pop the camber bolts up front, set my desired camber front and rear, chuck in the subframe lock bolts, then go get an alignment!

Reuben
11-15-2012, 03:02 AM
Went to go adjust the camber in the rear, and basically dial it in to max camber. Noticed the drivers side had virtually none, even after adjusting.... So I jacked the car back up, popped the wheel back off, and the bolt out... to find that the little tab on the special washer that essentially turns it from a normal bolt to a camber bolt, had snapped off! Oh STINK au!

Fortunatelly I just so happen to have a SPARE set coming in tomorrow from the states, ordered it along with new camber bolts for the front, and subframe lockbolts for the rear. Will replace the broken one tomorrow, dial in that camber, and I have a wheel alignmnet booked in for saturday morning!

slaytalera

Was it aftermarket? Id assume so, since US legos don't have adjustable rear camber, then again when Subaru leaves out something as simple as the light ring around the ignition, who know what else they've left out.

Funny thing is, the BC doesn't have the light ring, bein g a low speccer, but, in it's place is a black ring to fill the gap! Maybe I should get some light ring kits together and get em sent over stateside eh? :P

Anyway, yeah, not even STi's got rear camber adjust, it was indeed an aftermarket jobbo.

You guy's have a door lighting circuit right? Only thing is the light ring has a timer, bout 15 seconds or so after closing the door, then it slowly fades out. If you have a circuit anywhere in the car like that (foot well light?) then wiring will be piss easy. If not, might have to find out how it all works...

I'll try find out where the timer is, and see if I can get those with, too. But hard to tell where it is in the car, since all the BG wiring diagrams online are for shitspec USDM, nothing about JDM, with all those cool little extras, so no wiring diagrams for things like puddle lights on the doors, fading key ring light, and footwell light, power folding and heated mirrors, windscreen wiper heaters, auto aircon/HVAC etc. etc. etc.

Also. Big day of udates....

And did a little mod this evening, as it has been bugging me for quite some time!.

I don't know about you guys, but I prefer leaving my fog lights on all day, every day. A bit like the requirements with modern cars to have daytime running lights, I feel it simply helps with visibility out on the open road. Now Subaru in their infinite wisdom, when they were designing the Gen 3, realised that some people do like having their lights on during the day, and that it was really difficult to read the climate control screen when doing this (especially with sunglasses on!), as it dims with the lights, so that it doesn't blind you at night... So, they added a little feature to it, if you hold the off button for 2 seconds, it un-dims the climate control computer. Neato. Sadly they had this epiphany after they designed the BG climate control computer, and as such, BG's lack this feature.

How can one fix this. Easy. Find the wire that supplies a voltage to the climate control computer, aka, the HVAC computer, when dash illumnation is on. Install a switch on that wire. Then hide the switch, or mount it tastefully somewhere.

Step 1, find the wire. Here I have the ignition on, and am testing voltage while switching the headlights on and off.

https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/11/IMG_5236-1.jpg https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/11/IMG_5237-1.jpg

Step 2, splice the wire, then tidy up.

https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/11/IMG_5239-1.jpg

https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/11/IMG_52411-1.jpg

Step 3, locate remote switch. In this case, I'm hiding it in my glovebox temporarily.

https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/11/IMG_5246-1.jpg

https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/11/IMG_5247-1.jpg

I'm going to track down a factory subie switch to go here, in place of the coin holder... But what switch? No idea, will have to figure that out. Obviously I can't have another wiper heater switch... I'm thinking about getting a seat heater switch, but those have like 50 wires to deal with timers and all that stuff. I do wonder if I could make it work as just an on off, buy using only 2 pins, out of the 5 or 6 or however many it is... Does anyone know of other switches BG's have here, that would be more appropriate for my dimmer?

Reuben, i'm in the process of modifying the label on my second heated wipe switch, friend of mine is a screen printer and should be able to make something to suit whatever we need. I just need to make the switch design I want in illustrator, I have a switch setup for my antenna to keep it down so need to install that (if anyone has the pinout for these switches i'd love you because I need to splice it so the illumination works o-o)

When I get around to it i'll send you a pic and if you are interested could get one done for you.

Reuben
11-18-2012, 05:46 AM
Make your own pinout mate, multimeters are awesome! Just get voltages across all the pins, then see which pins get continuity across them when switched on etc. You'll be able to apply logic to it, and figure it out!!

Also, update on the suspension...

Yesterday I got the alignment after instslling the pink laterals, and went for a test drive.

HOLY...

FUCKING...

SHIT...

The most incredible mod I have done to date... Simply put, it's mindblowing. Ask anyone who got to go for a ride this weekend!!! And no better day than yesterday to essentially put a big TICK over the suspension mods box, and label it complete, as it was Beasts 5th 'Reuben day' you could call it. I first met, drove, and bought Beast on the 17th of nov, 2007! 5 long, very awesome years with the thing :D

In other news, yesterday I wore the rear pads down to the tabs, had the lovely wear tab squeeling for all of 20km, before making it into Repco, picking up a set of TWR's, and having them all fitted half an hour later :D Also inspected the rear rotors, and they look almost as minty fresh as the 6 month old rotors up front. Didn't measure the thickness, as I didn't have the min thickness at hand, but they look pretty bloody good.

And lastly.

So, Beast got used as a moving truck today. I got a new house! Kinda had a falling out with my last flatmate, who owned the house I was renting a room in. Got a lease on my own place now, with the girlfriend. It has, well quite literally, million dollar views, a double garage ALL FOR US that actually has a storage/work bench. Also has a fire place, epic master bedroom, with the best views in the house, brand new oven, and gas stove top, situated up the top of hill, with a forest behind it... Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. Paradise.

And, with all the moving, hooking up power and internet etc, I still managed to change a CV half shaft on a mates WRX. Bloody easy job though!

Mmmmm, shiny parts. New fuel filter, after years of putting it off, and a can of upper engine clean... Air and oil filters are to go into my garages stock for next time. One fuel filter and air filter and upper engine clean for mitches GT too. Oh, and the bolt box, various sizes of 8mm, 10mm, and 12mm nuts and bolts. Yum! Usually bought bolts here are rubbish, and they all seem to have bloody 13mm heads, when I saw this kit at work, for just $30, I could NOT say no!

Fucking hit the bank hard though! Looks like the new phone will be on the next pay cycle instead...

So, the passenger side sway bar link that kept coming loose, and so got a dose loctite bearing retainer compound (didn't have any thread lock), which then made the drivers side come loose, so that received high strength super stud lock... Finally came loose. Retaining compoint doesn't work as well as stud lock. So that got stud locked today, hopefully that's the last time it ever comes loose!!!

Then I ran the upper engine cleaner, changed the fuel filter, and did an ECU reset. Nice to get some general maintenance going! I believe that was the last of my maintenance items, now all that's left is to start collecting parts to re-do the manifold... Yum.

Zac

Hows the upper engine cleaner work?

Reuben
02-25-2013, 03:58 AM
Basically the same as what you guys call 'seafoam'. Spray it into the intake manifold, and it foams up like mental, and disolves and easy all the caked oil and general engine scum, then you start the motor, and run the second half of the can with engine running, so that it goes down the runners and into the cyls. Basically it cleans all the shit out of the manifold. Great shit. It should be done every 10,000k's, or every second oil change.

Update time.

I'm far too tired to give the full story right now, so heres the cliffs notes

Few years ago I picked a cruise control kitt off a 2.5 N/A (we call em 250T's over here), but it didn't work. The throttle cables are not interchangable, the only cable that can work on a turbo BG, is a cruise control cable off a turbo BG, which are EXCEEDINGLY rare. 90% of the cruise control BG's out of japan are on 250T's.

Well, a couple of months ago, a week before flying home to Auckland, a mate of mine called me saying there was a twin turbo BG at the local scrap yard, a you-pick-the-parts-yourself place called Pick-a-Part. I was literally off the plane, into the airport bathroom to change into my pick-a-part clothes, and off to to the yard. Pulled my complete tool box out of my suitcase, and 30 mins later, I was the owner of a turbo BG cruise control unit....... Nice....

Over the last week i've been slowly installing it. Turns out wiring between USDM N/A, and JDM TT is identical, down to the colours of the wires - so has been a sinch using the diagrams and doing the job.

Pic bomb time.

Found some ol unused twin turbo solenoid wiring, so have hijacked that, didn't need to run a single new wire through the firewall. Ace.

The BF wagon in the garage is the mrs, shale. BF GT, has a V2 wrx motor, BG Auto box, and a BC RS ECU, it bloody flies.
The GC on the main road is shales, tis an N/A, dressed up like a V6 STi
The BG behind that is his lordship, the all mighty mighty beast.
The furthest BC is shales sisters, she's off to oz for 5 years, so in the meantime we are looking after it. Tis a GT, totally stock, mint condition aside from the paint, and with only 125,000km's on the clock.
The closest BC is my little runabout, blighter.

The GC in the drive is our mates, sam, it's a genuine V6 STi, untouched aside from exhaust.
The BL is a mate visiting from christchurch, 3L H6 with brembo's and a bit of suspension work.

As for cruise, you need:

Cruise throttle cable (vac operated)
Cruise vac pump
Cruise computer
Brake switch
Clutch switch (looks like a second brake switch can be used as)
On/Off switch
Sub switch (steering wheel controller) - this can be mounted on the collum, rather than wheel, to save modifying the momo.

Not an issue, you come into the country on a working holiday visa, then once in, apply for jobs, and your employer will change it to a sponsored work visa. Done. Within a few years residency is essentially a given. Most mechs, and I mean most, in qt are on visas. Also since subarus are literally the most prevelant car in qt, experience there helps. The rest are hilux/4runners, navaras, and toybotas

Today I had some quality beast time... He's still not being driven, but, his WOF expired, and the thought of not being able to pay reg irked me, so I thought I should get him wofable, which involved installing a airbag light.

Turns out that's easier said than done. Turns out what I thought would be the hard part was the easy part.

First the hard part (easy part), was to remove a square of paint off the warning light panel, remove the "AIRBAG" piece from an old dead legacy tacho, then super glue it on...

https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2013/08/IMG_76351-1.jpg (http://s197.photobucket.com/user/Pilot_Reuben/media/IMG_7635-1.jpg.html)

Sorted

Then the wiring... Turns out they use a state inverter, the airbag system feeds it 12v when working, and if it cuts out for any reason, the light comes on... so had to de-solder the inverter off the 250T cluster, and wire it into beasts loom.

https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2013/08/IMG_7640-1.jpg (http://s197.photobucket.com/user/Pilot_Reuben/media/IMG_7640.jpg.html)

Then... the bulb... Unlike all the other bulbs on the cluster uses a common ground, and switched power, instead of common power and switched grounds... So had to remove the contacts for that bulb, and install my own, which I borrowed from another part of the printed circuit. First test failed, as my insulation wasn't any good, and popped the fuse! woops. Made some improvements, and I'm pretty confident all will be well. Yay!

Success!

So... With blighter kicking beast out of the garage... then getting all these go fast bits that were once beasts speciality... He's gone and thrown a tantrum...

Only mild, but I had a front suspensing clunk/tick develop... and has been getting worst the last 2 days, so I rolled beast into the garage to have a look. Didn't take long to find... His FRONT sway bar link had come loose.... Guess he still wants to play this game after I chemically welded the rears permanently in place... Fucks sake. While I was under there I saw something else very alarming. The once even worn RE002's have had their inside edge worn the fuck down. FUCK. the rack end play I was waiting till I could afford an alignment to fix is going to have to be done this thursday, I am NOT going to loose another set of tyres. GRRRRRR.

Oh and he got a nail in one of the rears which I got fixed yesterday.

And he's developed a new squeek from the engine bay, that's not the alternator or powersteering pump (they are still squeeking anyway). Sounds like it's coming from the right head/turbo, real fucking odd. God damn....

BEAST WHY YOU...

Got up nice and early this morning, and went into town to pick up my genuine rack boot... It hadn't arrived. Went next door to Repco, and we didn't have any on the shelf... Called Queenstown motor group, they had none either... So left repco with some multi fit stretchy fuckers, since I had the alignment booked for 1pm! Got in there, and decided I didn't like massive camber, so took out the secondary camber bolts up front, and basically returned it to factory, set max camber on the factory bolts. Then went about doing the rack end that had play... what a prick to get off!!! had to remove my carbon sump guard to remove the jack plate, to move the sway bar out of the way.... stalled the job by a good margin, so it was all rush rush to get it back toget in time for the alignment!!! Also turns out that the rack boot was fine (it's only 4 years old), the oil on it was leaking onto it from my primary turbo oil return bung, seems that is still leaking after repeated attempts to stop it. Ah well. Oh, and rotated the worn fronts to the rear, so they can think about what they have done. Silly.

Alignment went well. -0.9º camber for both rears, -0.7 for front right (max), and -1.0 for front left (not max, but we agreed it'd be good trade off for road driving, referring to camber in the road when sticking to ones lane). Toe set to 0 all round cause I like my tyres not shredding themselves. Drove real nice on the test drive, still very very very well balanced, only the slightest hint of understeer on entry if late braking, which immediately is fixed once transfered onto acceleration, and no more tyre squeel early in hard cornering like I was getting with the stupid ammounts of camber I had before. Hard acceleration through a corner offered a very balanced and easy to control oversteer that feels totally natural. In fact it was all very very nice, really back to perfection. Happy days!!!

This fucking car, I tell yah, subaru perfection, really so easy and rewarding to drive... Makes all the little troubles here and there worth it.

Reuben

And posted today

Beasts coolant rentention skills are being put into question yet again. Thankfully this time it's only the turbo coolant return. 5 years of good service that hose has put in, can't complain for something that's been on and off umpteen times, and is not the right size.

Also, the new squeak isn't a new squeak thankfully, it's an old one tansmogified. Tis the power steering pump.

I am now at a state of peace, knowing what is wrong. It doesn't have to be fixed, I just have to know what it is. that is all.

So yesterday was world green day or some shit like that. And duly, half the fleet shat themselves.

So I'm working on a BG TS at the moment, leaky seal was the prognosis, so I bought some cam and crank seals and went hard. Got half way through the job on tuesday, found the crank seal was sitting proud by 2mm, and the inner dust lip was actually off the crank, it was that far out. But I have no vice, so couldn't compress the tensioner. Also had the wrong oil pump seal, so locktighted the 3 loose screws, then pin-pinched them all, downed tools and left it there.

Yesterday at work, on world earth green something day, my dad calls me up... The ABS and VDC lights popped on, in his BH GT VDC, then a few k's down the road, all the gauges died... so he pulled into the petrol station, where the car started running rough and died as he was positioning into a park... First bet, maybe terminals on battery (easiest answer first right?) Nope, so after a bit of pondering, I figured alternator failed (250,000k's on this workhorse), and the systems were dropping off as voltage would have been reducing. His auto sparkie figured the same, so I sent him off my spare BH alternator today.

So, day 2 on the TS in the garage, had to nip out to subaru to pick up the correct oil pump seal, to finish this timing belt job, and on the way back, what should happen? Leo's engine just stopped dead. Frankton road is busy as fuck and I could not hear the engine at all (especially with a stock zaust), so I pulled over to see what was what. tried cranking it, but still couldn't hear what was going on over the noise of the 5:30 traffic, so wound the windows up and cranked some more, that's when I heard that the compression sounded real odd... like it had none/only some/only in some cyls... what the fuck...
then it dawned on me...
That cambelt was not changed on that RS motor that went in... It was on the to-do list... This weird compression issue sounds like it could be...

I popped a cambelt cover off, and yup. Snapped. Irony is cruel.

So I got picked up, and what should happen... fucking frank overheats again! Thankfully only as we're pulling into out street, so that needs a tee piece ASAP, and a new heater core when funds allow.

Spilling over to today, and I took beast to work, since he was getting his roof vinyl wraped today (it looks MEAN, no more fucked-about-to-peel-opaque clearcoat!), and I had to run an errand out to frankton, on the way back, what should happen... his squeeky wheel bearing i've been putting off till funds started to periodically grind... So he's getting parked up, for a month or two.. AGAIN.

Beer time...

We have, the ever wonderful beast, tyres are to the chords, dead wheel bearind, and no wof/reg
Blighter, the BC in the garage undergoing about 5 different conversions at once. (SOHC to DOHC, 1.8 to 2.0L, SPFI to MPFI, NA loom to Turbo loom, Auto to Manual)
Shale, the mrs' Impreza, fucked wheel bearing
Frankie, the mrs' BF GT wagon, overheats every drive, heatercore issue.
Leo, the mrs' BC GT sedan that I've been driving, snapped cambelt
Rusty, the flatmates BF GT wagon, has a myriad of CEL's, and idles like shit
And lastly, Alf, the flatmates BC GT sedan, runs fine.

Then we have workbench A, tool storage and work computer. Wee mac mini wirelessly connected to the network upstairs, which has the files G5, with many many gigs of music and factory service manuals and other technical items. Did it's first run tonight with diagrams of how window tracks work in a BG I was working on. Second shelf is kind on jobs on the fly, and under that is suspension stuff, springs, struts, arms, crossmembers.
Workbench B is the astroturfed bench above, which once the manifolds have gone back to sam, is basically going to be where I rebuild all my dead alternators, starters and calipers, and bolt and bit storage for the job at hand.

So the Beast has awoken from his slumber. He's been on rego hold since feb or march or so...

The question was, how do you get a car with the cords showing on it's tyres, to the tyre shop that's over NZ's highest paved road, with no WOF and reg on hold?

You don't.

I loaded them into the back of Blighter and we went for a jaunt to wanaka where the deal was to be done. Then over the course of the week I sorted wof out (flew through, clean sheet), and then reg, all in time for a roadie to Dunedin! God DAMN was it nice to be driving the Beast again, waht a fucking awesome car, the pure sense of safety from that superb road holding and balance, and sheer amount of speed it can build in such a short time. So happy he's back! I look forward to a loooooong summer of many fun drives in this car.

Welp, looks like I've blown another big end... Initial theory puts blame squarely on me too, which is an embarrassment, and a totally un-needed waste of a fucking good motor.

My suspicion is oil starvation mid corner thanks to low oil level. There's a leak on the back of the block where the primary oil return used to be, it's been there since the conversion, I've tried numerous times to stop it, but was never successful. This leaks has meant that when I get lazy with checking my oil level, it can get dangerously low (there may be another leak internally too, he chuffes blue on startup). Worst it ever was recorded was 2.5L drained once on an oil change. I haven't check my oil in a while, and when I just checked it now, the usual no reading on the dipstick. And we were doing the hairpins going up the crown terrace when it let go. I feel like such a dick :(

Tossing up options, thinking new crank, new bearings, new gaskets, could be all that's needed, I did less than a km after hearing it tick, I'm thinking there'll be fuck all bearing through the engine. Pistons and bore and heads all only have 70,000k sine the recondition, they should be good to go. Will inspect of course, maybe we can finally find what I cooked during the grasskhana 5 years ago, which is when he started chuffing blue on startup.

Other option is a V7 block from Subaru. Slap it straight in, factory fresh tolerances on everything, will get rid of my silly forged clatter. But not cheap, def a few k. But it's ultra tempting. Also less prone to big ends by a big margin.

I see a lot of talk on the NZ and Aussie forums about phase 3, us Americans have only had the blocks labeled as phase 1 and 2. Is there a link to explain what you guys define the differences as or could you explain it?

Reuben
10-07-2014, 04:05 PM
Phase 3 is 2000 onwards, when they moved to AVCS and top feed injectors, phase 2 is the very brief 98-00 era, first of the 8-bolt housing and staggered intake bolts, biggest difference being first rear thrust crank. Phase1, or as it was advertised when the bg gtb was beings sold 'master-4' is the good ol tech, pre 98

Block and other bits arrived today, $3076+ ($2430 USD) for an EJ207 (Semiclosed, forged pistons) block, oil cooler, oil pump, headgaskets, seals, timinig kit and water pump. Fuck yeah! Then the government added $460 of tax on top of that... BAH GST.

Well things have been going less than fantastically, but so far every problem has just led to me spending more money and upgrading or improving that which broke.

Engine came out with a fuss, dowels rusted and seized good. In the tussle, I split open an engine mount. BH solid (or atleast, beefy as fuck) mounts to go in and replace.

Clutch was a cunt, also rusted in place, and ended up with me getting the pry bar out, once finally pried free, the clutch plate fell to the floor and chipped a decent chunk out of the corner... All the local mechanics said that no, they would not recomend using it, but if it was their car, they would. I felt given that we plan to road trip to Auckland, the clutch could be put to good use in blighter when he gets a turbo box, so the next day I was on the blower to Exedy, and they gave me a KILLER price on a new heavy duty kit. Spigot bearing also full of rust and totally fucked. That was new when I last saw it!

Found that the breather setup I had in there was a moogied TT setup (must have missed that when converting), this time I'll do beast right and put in the proper single turbo crank tee and hoses. The crank case to PCV valve hose is solid as a rock, so that will be going in the bin too.

The one working knock sensor broke when I took it off, I wanted a new one anyway, now I'm forced to get one, lol.

The heat shield on the up-pipe was totally free, no idea how it didn't make any noise, but I figure since the peace is disturbed, and the pipe is out, I'll get it welded back up.

The ONE bit of good news out of all this is the turbo. The turbo which I was fearing would be fucked, is actually in better shape than last time I saw it! looks like the imperfections on the impellor blades have been worn away over the least 60,000 k's, and it's looking smooth and nice now. no play, and clean as a whistle, seriously, the whole intake on this damn car is spotless as fuck. There is oil from blowby, but no carbon build up, everything is silver and shiney. No dust whatsoever too (I love genuine filters!).

One oddity to report is a LOT of white stuff in the exhaust. turbine housing is white all over the place, exhaust ports white, the down pipe is looking polished, no carbon whatsoever, just white at the turbo end. Carbon at the joiner end... wondering if this is what lovely hot running constantly thrashed exhuasts look like, I have been known to get my turbine housing red hot on a regular basis... o2 looks white too though, I'm wondering if at 170,000k's, it's worth getting a new one of those too... I mean, why not?

I promise lots of pics tomorrow, I have a mountain of new parts, it's frankly pornographic.

Reuben

Dirty bloody welds on the heat shields, Rusty's heat shield had let go in the same place, and it was the most annoying heat shield rattle I've ever heard, so when I saw beast was starting to crack in the same place, I got a local mechanic to gum it up for me.

The white stuff in the exhaust. On second thought, I'm wondering if it's from burning oil, he did puff the blue smoke, and the oil consumption was rapid, up to 1L per 1000k's.

And knowing that VF39's have a reputation for getting cracks in the exhaust housing, I thought I'd inspect mine. Sure enough, only 75,000K's on this bad boy, and already there. This was common to see in the states around 6-7 years ago when they were modding the version 9's over there. Dunno what to do with it, I think I might just chuck it back on and forget about it. The big reason to get the silicone pipe! look at that dirty zig zag kink, nasty. I reckon the new inlet will open up that turbo nicely, should compensate for the power lost from dropping my compression ratio down a few points. +5 here -5 here, chump change.

Speaking of oil everywhere, this block was shiney bare alloy fresh from an acid dip only 70,000k's ago... only leaks are from the breathers, and the power steering pump. will have to remedy these things... power steering pump is also whiney as fuck too, needs replacing bad.

And the infamous primary oil return... The magic hole that no frost plug will fit... A mechanic did give me the tip of belting a frost plug with a hammer, to splay it out a bit, so it will go in snug. It's that or force an oversize one in... You can see why first time round, I chose to weld up the pipe and put it back in, never wanted it to leak, but once the seal was broken...

Rust, rust everywhere!!! Clutch was rusty everywhere, spigot bearing was toasted, and rusty, dowels were rusty... How does one stop this? Got the motor stripped right down, it's just a bare longblock now, no sump no sensors no nothing. Haven't taken the heads off though, I don't trust my 12-pointers to take the head bolts off... Did whip a rocker cover off, and shit she's clean inside! pristine! Ditto on the rods and pistons, they look as good and spotless as the day they went in. Excite! No charred on oil/stained alloy anywhere, which I find frankly amazing given how that engine was driven.

Also got a new compressor, managed to score a 2.5 hp Belt drive, so much quieter than the direct drive I've been using!

Right, so payday was yesterday, naturally I've spent it all today.

Purchased that stuff I ordered from Subaru: Rocker cover kit, cam seals, valve stem seals, PCV valve and crank case breather setup. Also purchased from strong: Heater hoses (fingers crossed they are in good nick), A replacement engine mount (went BH, as I found a good one on a block at karls), and a new knock sensor.

So with my money drained, I have to play my cards right, here's the road map:

Week 1
Clean intake manifold and tweak (silicone hose already fitted)
Clean out the coolant crossover pipe, and sand flanges
Clean out sump, THOROUGHLY
Clean and rebuild old oil pump incase it's needed for Beast, if not, for Blighter.
Clean engine bay
Re-Wrap downpipe, already have some nice new and flash 'titanium' (it's not) wrap for it.

Week2
Take engine down to Jonesy's
Take block down to Jonesy's
Have heads sent away to be reconned
Maybe even have the heads back in time for re-assembly
Thrusday is Pay-day, so can pay by Friday

Week3
Wait for heads to get back and block to be assembled, cause it never is that quick,
Get flywheel skimmed for new clutch (already purchased)
Engine home.
Assemble engine

Week4
Engine in.
Thursday is payday, Thursday is start day!
Roll around the block, once first heat cycle done, change oil?
Weekend trip to... Christchurch? 1000k round trip, almost exactly. lots of long straights, perfect for running in. Not perfect for fuel economy surging along... meh.

So some dude made a vid of driving one of my favourite roads, the crown range. This is the road that claimed beast, due to my low oil I got starvation in the lower hairpin section.

Just a sunday drive, we do this road maybe once or twice a month, there's a great restaurant at the end of it...

So very happy day today. I've slowly been plodding along, only done half the cleaning I was supposed to do by now, but today was a big one, the sump.

Yeah, there was a fair bit of bearing in the bottom, I went through 4 cans of degreaser blasting everything out, then blasting it out again, then again and again, to make sure there was not one fucking tiny miniscule spec left. Bitch is going to be the cleanest part in the whole car!
Then I sprayed it with brake clean to get all the degreaser out, but even brake clean leaves quite a residue behind, so once that was done, I ran 2L of fresh oil through it, sloshed it around, got my fingers in there and scrubbed a bit, then drained it out. Should now be degreaser residue free and primed to go. The pickup and the bolt in block baffle got the same treatment too.

Looking dry after the brakeclean has been through and the air gun to get out any remaining detritus. This pic also shows off the PBMS baffles, I guess they stop oil sloshing up into the block through manic cornering, and they add a wee one way valve in the original top plate there too.

And after being washed and primed with some 15w-40 mineral I had kicking round with no car it could go in. Makes great cleaning oil now I suppose!

More great news, got a call from the engine reconditioners in Invercargill, they want to take the valves out, and regrind them, and the seats too, they will install my supplied genuine valve stem seals, machine the headgasket face, and have given the all go on the cams and journals (there was a bit of scoring on them from the bearing last time, and maybe this time). Total price, $300+ fuck yes! I had budgeted $400+++ so stoked it was less. Also, exedy are machining my flywheel for free, it's part of getting a clutch from them, so I sent that up to Auckland this arvo with a return ticket included.

Happy fucking days. This marks the beginning of the end of the project, next week is going to be assembly time!!!

Service items, new grade for a new motor. Beast traditionally ran his aftermarket forged 20G bottom end on 10w-60 edge, but I figured this motor is essentially a 2014 V7, I best run good V7 oil. Went with the 5w-40 over 5w-30 though, cause beast does not get nana'd around.

One thing concerning me, is wtf is this? A second crank case breather? Thankfully the 20K coolant crossover clears it, and is flush with it, so capping it is easy. But is capping it ok? is it simply ancillary, or is it vital?

Well, looking in fast, it appears that it's almost a crank case equaliser, if anything. The V7's have two rocker cover breathers on each side, the forward breather links up each side and goes into the intake like normal, but the rear breathers link together under the intake manifold, and go into that second crank case breather, they don't get sucked to anywhere, that second crank case breather is just connected to the rocker covers... odd. guess I can just cap it off.

More progress this afternoon, cleaned all flanges. Exhaust manifold, up-pipe, turbo, Coolant crossover etc. even scrubbed in my wee makeshift degreaser bath the crossover pipe, the heater core hoses and hardlines, even the tensioner bracket. Yummy. Also fitted my new pcv valve to the manifold and finished putting that back together.

Only thing left is the engine bay and downpipe now. Then once the heads are back and slapped onto the block, we are all good to go. Oh, need to find a cap to go on the blocks second breather.

That extra breather port is very similar in position to the ej22t one, it serves to equalize pressure between the heads and crankcase. But it can be capped with no ill effects, been done for years on the ej22t builds.

nevermind, you already figured that out lol.

I'm interested in how this turns out, I'm doing similar but with a rebuilt ej205 shortblock and 98 25d heads, v3 sti manifold and intake parts, going to run it off a v3 sti ecu.

Super stoked at the moment, heads and flywheel both returned yesterday, and the jobs on both are very nice. The valves look damn near new, and are freshly lapped in, valve stem seals in place, clearances all set on the shims. Happy days. And exedy did my flywheel for free as a part of the clutch kit, which was already on a super awesome deal. Having friends is good!

Also dealt with Alert Motorsport, these were the only guys that I could find that did a 3.5" silicone joiner in red, and they were the only guys I could find that had large blanking caps! The guy was super nice and looked after me. Blanking cap's for the breather, and the joiner is for afm to zs intake. Noms!

Got the motor assembled last night, with the ARP headstuds, and bloody hell 90ft lb of torque is quite a bit!!! This thing will never blow a head gasket :p today after work I started bolting things on, but predictably I was lacking things which halted assembly! Silly stupid stuff like no nozzle for the 3bond, no seal on the side of the water pump etc. bloody annoying! At least managed to fit the coolant crossover pipe, heater core pipes, forward cam caps and cam seals, and oil pump/seals. Pics tomorrow.

First of the small corrections to the single conversion, little bits that got left behind. This time round I was determined to make it perfect factory style single turbo. Even got a brand new hose with the silver wrap to go on here!

Sunday night I had the oil pump, water pump and tensioner bracket installed. Beasts original tensioner bracket was lost to a fix'n'flic I did on the side while doin beast... Turns out the newer style ones are hard to find, since the hamfisted out there love stipping the threads out! woops. I ended up with a BH one in the end, which has the provision for the small extra idler. I figured it couldn't be a bad thing, so I got a new mini idler to go with the timing kit! Monday night I managed to get the rest of the front end on, and the rocker covers.

Tomorrow is finishing things off, double checking all plugs and pipes are connected, less injectors and cam angle for first prime. Will fill the sump up and crank a fair bit by hand before dropping in. Then it's on the crane, clutch in, and with a bit of luck... In the hole!

Engine in! Camera ran out of battery though... Whoops. Flat mate got some on his phone though. Didn't connect anything up though, just bolted in at this stage. Tomorrow I hook everything up! 4-week plan called for first startup tomorrow, so we're pretty bang on for schedule.
