Steering wheel vibration at 60mph...

I noticed something wierd yesterday on the highway... when I get my car up to 55 or 60mph, the steering wheel starts to vibrate quite a bit back and forth, but when I speed up to 75mph or higher, the vibrating goes away. What could be causing this? I'm thinking my wheel(s) are not balanced or alignment??

I'd say probably a bad balance job on the wheels, or you've thrown a weight at some point. Get your shit rebalanced and have an alignment done just in case. Sometimes if you have too much toe it can cause this problem too.

Two more easy things to check:
- Make sure your lug nuts are on and torqued to specification
- Check for excess play in your wheels - could be something loose/worn out in the steering.

well i know for a fact that my steering rack bushings are shot and need to be changed... so maybe its that??

After you check all that other stuff, it could be your front struts. Tire could be bouncing along as you go down the road. I've been chasing something similar but with the rear wheels on my wife's mini-van. Had the rear tires balanced twice and it still did it. I was following her one day around town and could see the wheel hopping at 30mph where you wouldn't even feel it in the car. Just something to keep in mind if it isn't the tires balance or the rack bushings.

As far as alignment, do you have any uneven wear? Or are they scalloped?

Get your tires balanced, bring the psi up (it most likely is down to the low 30's or high 20's) and make sure your alignment is up to spec; that's what I would do.

This happened to me before, i got it checked and i got such a run around. In the end after taking care of bushings, looking at tie rods and this pillow thing whos name slips my mind right now, i turned out to be a seized caliper causing monstrous vibration. so check that out as a possibility too.

this probally isnt the most common thing but i had the same exact problem and i knew the balance job was right cause i did it myself and tightened the lugs with a torque wrench and i still had a vibration and it was a small bend in my rim that i found after i actudentally hit a big pothole and bent it another 1/2" in just something to look at

Actually if you get it at 60mph then its a wheel balance. Cheapest thing to get fixed and may fix your problem. Also might want to check to see when your last rotation was so that way if you are due they can get that done while they are balancing your wheels. Hopefully you were smart and have free rotate and balance.
