I got this 96 Legacy L about 2 months ago and it has a sloppy shifter(I can move it in gear as if it were in neutral) Anyway I was driving 2 days ago and I came to a stop and all of the sudden the shifter was dead left to right. If I put it in neutral it just falls to the left of the gear box and now it's real loose. I looked under my car at the shift linkage and saw that a pin or barrel was missing on a part and the other on is loose. Making my shift feel this way. I was wondering if there was any part number for this part??? Or should I just try a junk yard or a hardware store?
Here is a pic of what I'm looking for!

Some cars it is riveted, and can't be taken apart. But then again yours came out so it might not be. They sell a linkage update, it's about $80. I'll get you the link later on.
There is a spring that connects the shifter joint to the stay bar - that is what returns the shifter to the middle in neutral from the left. In the 6 years I have had my car it's popped off twice.

If you have the cash this would be a great upgrade:
STi Linkage:

If not it is possible to find a good parts guy at a subaru dealership to source out the part. From what I've found there is no part # for that nut/bolt assembly.
You can try your local hardware store / napa - auto zone.
But if you really want 100% genuine, source it from a local scrapper.
Good luck

$230.00
I am 99% sure this should just bolt in since our 5MT is the same as the impreza.

Thats not to bad considering that the B & M short shifter(shaft and bushings only) was about $215 shipped.
EDIT: just reading a customers review of that shifter and he says that the vibration is pretty bad with this shifter because of the style bushings. I think I might just go to a junk yard and pull a 2.5GT's shifter off. When I was there looking at it, It seemed really stiff and it went into gear like it should.

That person must be sensitive to vibration, I took a spin in my friends GC8 with STi linkage and upgraded bushings and there isn't a whole lot of vibration.
But hey i guess i am use to aggressive.

yea I was still going to go with that shifter setup but will do it down the line when the engine gives and a WRX or STI engine comes into thought!
