opinions on where and what parts to get

it official!!! im getting a 1998 subaru legacy outback wagon, but it needs work, im getting the car for $500!!!!

so heres what it needs

-clutch (maybe)
-battery
-wires
-plugs
-tires

and heres what i want

-new suspension (to lower it from "monster truck mode")
-wrx/sti rims and tires to allow for the suspension/drop
-intake
-axleback exhaust
-headers

so what brand/places should i buy from for these parts, and if i am replacing the clutch in my driveway (jackstand/jack) is there anything specific i need to know? does the flywheel need to be resurfaced?

also if you have any of these parts mainly what i "need" let me know but i will also be looking to buy anyones used suspension to drop this baby ASAP i just want to make sure i wont have fitement issues, i want a bolt in setup sinc ei cant weld/fabricate (i dont have the tools)

1- clutch OEM or aftermarket exedy (basicly the same thing)
2- battery well theres only 5 battery manufactors in the world there just labeled different. anything but store brand is good. i like interstate personal
3- wires OEM so there not made of cheap plastic that breaks under the heat
4- OEM or NKG double platium
5- tires it depends what are you looking for all seasons, summer tire, preformance tire?

heres what i want

1- umm depends what spring rates your looking for and how far you want to lower it
2- nasioc or ebay
3- any subaru MAF intake will work
4-
5- ebay knock off (search for 2.5 rs headers) or you can go the expensive borla brand

you flywheel needs to be resurfaced can be done at most auto machine shops. or advanced sells reman flywheels for like $55
have a friend help you when your doing the clutch makes it alot easier putting it back in.
just take your time make sure everything is off that needs to be. if find it easier to not remove the lines for the a/c and p/s and just set the assemblys off to the side.

cool thanks, i just picked up a haynes subaru legacy repair manual, and i am SUPER excited and glad that i did because it give you step by step instructions on how to replace the clutch along with diagrams and tips/warning

looking through my hanes manual and looking at this exhaust system it looks like it would fit but i wanted to know if ti actually will or if anyoone has any experience on wheather it will

well im trying to figure out what cars exauhst, cat back or axle back fist the legacy outback because i know i wont be able to order it for the outback but if i can order it for another car as long as it bolts up i will

also when looking at my haynes manual it shows that the headers are equal length with a catback that has 2 inlet spots instead of the unequal legnth with one flange

Ok.... so you have a car that needs work... It's a 98 outback which means it has the EJ25. Before you invest in all these other "extras", put some money aside and make sure your headgaskets aren't toast. If they're selling for $500 my bet is it's overheating and they can't afford headgaskets. Which means they've driven it and the heads are probably warped at this point.

IF that's not the case, then you can do these other things. For your exhaust, no impreza exhaust will "bolt up". You should instead be looking on ebay, search JDM BG5. You'll find some wagon exhausts on there that will be bolt up, otherwise you'll need to go custom (whether that's taking an impreza exhaust and modifying it, or if it's going completely scratch built, each cost about the same). The outback has a longer bumper than all the other legacy's so you'll need a slightly longer exhaust (in the case of N1/cannon style exhausts) or a longer tip in the case of a tucked away muffler w/tip.

For what it's worth, I've seen that style exhaust on two wagons and I thought they looked pretty good, but I've seen many many more cars that it didn't look good. It's also a wagon, which means you need to get a high quality muffler with good packing material to avoid having drone inside the cabin from the exhaust resonance. Further more, a 3" exhaust like that turbo one is going to destroy your power. 2, 2.25, or 2.5 inches depending on where you want your power to be is what you need.

well the car is coming from a close family friend, the head gaskets were done last year, the reason for the price is because it may/may not need a clutch and its been sitting for almost a year so they want it out of their driveqway, the reason i have the plugs/wires/battery listed are to replace the parts that may need to be since it sat, i didnt really see any body frame rust but then again i wasnt checking very carfully, so all i saw was so underhoood surfacr rust on the brake lines and obviously a dead battery. also i will need to drain the gas tank and maybe the lines and put some fresh gas in it before i try to start it. anything else you guys recommend doing to it before i tryto start it again after it sat so long?

fuel filter, some fresh oil and filter. clean all the battery termnals. check belts. use a breaker bar to spin the engine before you start it to make sure it turns
