I got home last night, and while I waited for my wife to get home, I decided to give the Subaru a quick once-over...(check fluids, etc.) I haven't checked the air filter since we bought the car from my parents, so that was the last thing I checked. Pulled it out, inspected it, put it back in and went inside.
This morning, getting ready for work, I start the car, and the rpms rev up to about 2-2.5k then it just falls on it's face and dies. Popped the hood, nothing seemed out of the ordinary... I didn't unplug any wires/sensors to get the airbox cover off. Tried to start the car one more time, it rev'd up, fell to 1k for a couple seconds, then died again.
What did I do? Something with the MAF? did I pull a wire loose somewhere? I'd rather not have to get it towed to a repair shop.
Thanks!

Thanks! I was in such a hurry this morning I didn't have time to look at anything. Will check it out tonight.

first unplug your maf and try to start your car. the car hsould start in what is called home mode (it's a factory setting which just dumps alot of fuel and alot of air to makesure theres a combustion everytime.) if your car runs and stays on you know your maf is bad. if not then it could be either your idle air control valve( this regulates your rpm during idle) if that goes bad the car will not stay on nad will die during idle unless you give it gas for a lil and rev it up a bit but you can still have that proplbem at traffic lights and shit. the other thing to check is the TPS - throttle position sensor ( if thats not working the car wont read the throttle right nad the car may stall and may rev high at times. gl man

Figured it out... and it was super easy. I was just freaked out about it not starting and being late to work and failed to notice the hose just past the MAF (underneath the tube) was not connected. I had pulled it free when I reconnected the MAF/Airbox assembly and just not noticed it.
Thanks guys!

Haha that happened to me when I had my 98 Forester L... went to check the filter and I pulled the cover way up (it was dark) and I did not notice the hose slipped off... I drove all the way home until I finally figured out the problem...
I felt pretty dumb :(

That just happened to me yesterday morning after checking the air filter and removing the resonator air box in the fender right before work. It freaked me out as well. Turned out to be the same hose that you had loose.

Glad I helped someone out then. :)
I do need to get a new airfilter though, this time, I know to check that hose when I'm done.

Thanks for the link. I'll check it out... But right now, I don't have much extra cash to spend between the baby on the way and the Typhoon eats enough on it's own.

I did the same thing, removed air filter for inspection, and afterwards car won't idle and will even stall. I checked for the vaccum line that your mentioning and they all seem to be intact. Maybe show a picture of the line you disconnected? Only codes being thrown are bad 02 sensor, knock sensor, but the car started acting up not even five minutes after inspecting air filter. Nd ran fine an hour before checking filter. Can't figure it out.

If yours did this right after checking air filter then check your MAF plug and wires. And just cause a vacuum line looks intact doesnt mean its not loose. As they get old they get hard and where they are stretched they stay stretched. Check for looseness of the vacuum lines. Also replacing the O2 sensor is easy.
