yep, once in awhile, I get this hint of sweet coolant smell in my cabin area. I turn on the fan and didn't smell anything coming out of there.
so what can cause this? does the coolant run thru the hvac inside the car? perhaps i have a leak? but the floor boards are not wet..hmm....

I would say pinhole leak in the heator core.

where is the heater core located exactly? right center of the dash? ..damn, if so, the dash has to come out

Yup. A little to the right, but still in the center of the dash. Which, like you said, has to come out. It's a 4 hour job according to AllData.

Check for leaks in the engine bay too. That's how I knew there was a problem when my waterpump seal failed. But, like was said. Could be the heatercore as well.

no leaks in the engine bay, so it'll be the heater core. and will that cause any huge problems in the future?

Actually I had the same problem and it turned out to the be head gasket. Something else you want to get checked.

You could get antifreeze poisoning and go into a coma/die. I'd suggest keeping windows open whenever possible. My stepmother had a heatercore go bad and ended up getting antifreeze poisoning. She felt sick to her stomach and lightheaded. Got a ride home (parked the car on the side of the road) and went to sleep. The next day at the doctors office she had the equivalent of a blood alcohol level of .17 (very high)

I friend of mine had his heater core go on an 02 BH. He's a mechanic for 15 yrs and it took him 8 hrs from start to finish.

I test drove a WRX that had a sweet smell coming from the vents when i turned on the A/C. Didnt really smell like anti-freeze though, like my Legacy did when i busted the radiator.

i smelt it coming back from work just now. its def. coming from the vents somewhere, i've yet to check the heater core for leakage. but if i turn on the ac/air i wont smell anything. i'll check it out and update this weekend
