View Full Version : How close is your motor to the hood?

So I was test fitting the intake manifold, turbo inlet & intercooler today...

I'm using an 04 STi crossmember & intercooler, Group-N motor mounts and an 05 EJ205.

First problem I ran into was that the intercooler was hitting the underhood supports at the rear of the hood scoop cutout (where the windshield sprayer hose runs). So I had to cut out some of the sheetmetal there for clearance, no big deal and everything fits nicely there.

Now that I can shut the hood all the way, the engine seems to be really close to the hood, the intake manifold plenum is almost touching the black heat blanket on the underside of the hood.

I'm wondering if this is just because of the lower hood profile on the legacy, or if my motor is sitting higher than it should.

To those who have swapped, how close is your motor to the hood?

take playdough and make sticks and point them straight up n several high points on your motor.. close the hood slowly till it clicks. then open and measure the lengths of the dough. my $.2

Yeah I was thinking about that....I have the headlights out so I can see exactly how close the motor is, just wondering whether it's 'normal'.

I'm using just about the same setup as you, save for the FMIC and and 05 crossmember...it does sit a little higher than the old engine using group N mounts. I think it's the subframe, imprezas have a deeper engine bay than Legacy's I think (but less square footage).

I have rubbing where the hood meets the coolant overflow bottle and at the TB, basically the screws on the hose/pipe clamps would rub on the hood mat (I have two rub/holes on the mat). Repositioned the TB one, that fixed it, but the coolant overflow one still rubs a little.

my ej20 rubs like a son of a gun, same places too, coolant resevoir, TMIC (i have a small plastic tank one from a forester XT).

I cut some of the sheetmetal off the hood it doesnt rub as bad now, i may raise up the corners of the hood with some washers if it continues to rattle like it does now though.. lmk if you find a solutino to the coolant bottle, thats the most annoying one.
