View Full Version : Is it really worth going all motor?

Everybody's doing WRX/STi swaps these days, so I had thought about doing something a little different. Not looking to have anything crazy fast, but something that can be about as much fun as a small 6 cylinder car. Granted this isn't going to be a short project (or cheap for that matter), I've already got a few things in mind. Custom ground cams, lightweight pullies, intake (trying to source a used Cobb right now), a nice low sounding custom exhaust comprised of Borla UEL headers, midpipe, and cat-back, and possibly some intake manifold work. For me, I know it's going to be hard to balance out school, work and saving money to put into her, but I think that once I'm near finished (I know, a project is never finished) I'll have something thats pretty unique to myself. What do you guys think? And does anyone know if the new accessPort for the 2.5 N/A motors is only for 07+ or what?

check out my webpage for links to the components. I am doing the same thing almost. I'm just doing intake, exhaust, pulleys, plugs and wires. www.turbometrics.com (http://www.turbometrics.com) has the Borla headers, Stromung high flow cat, Borla cat back exhaust, light weight pullies, throttle body spacer, end links and other things. www.cosmoracing.com (http://www.cosmoracing.com) has both cold air and short ram air intake systems as well as the adapter for the 3" cone filter.

For less than the cost of WRX swap you can get into WRX power levels NA. But at that point you've capped your performance (meaning no more power than that).
Here's the list:
2.5 liter block with early model EJ22 heads (dual port) for high compression motor
cometic thin headgaskets
equal length header
high flow cat
exhaust
delta cams
port/polish the heads
walbro 255 fuel pump
EJ22T injectors
engine management
100% e85 with tune
Talked with a local subaru builder here in colorado who estimated this setup as atleast 170-180 wheel horsepower with crank horsepower being close to the WRX figures of 220. The reason you go with the e85 is it is less prone to detonation, so you can run the higher compression with less worries. Add the larger injectors because you'll need more of that e85 flowing in.
For good measure you could probably throw in an MSD neon coil and some NGK BKR5E spark plugs (one stage hotter). This was my plan. I even have a set of EJ22 heads so I can send out the cams for regrind. But I took a ride in a franken motor'ed impreza and was really unimpressed. This guy didn't do cams or anything and actually had the stock exhaust which was probably hurting him. The other guy in town with a franken motor'ed legacy would never actually open it up because his exhaust was rediculously loud, but I can tell his was more powerful.
ninja edit: Having said that about the franken motor, the motorbuilder I spoke with (matt monson from nasioc/awdpirates) actually thinks that you can build better power out of a phase II EJ25 with EJ25 heads. There are bench flow numbers for all the different heads and the EJ25 heads flow much more. The only reason you are making power with the EJ22 heads on an EJ 25 block is the extra compression, but they flow substantially less.

Thanks man, I was actually gonna ask about changing the heads, but I didn't really want to go that route.

ez30 is already out, unless your thinking about a 3.6 or something.

I'm pretty sure there's nothing right now. Subaru is making a 2.0 non-turbo AVCS(Variable Valve Timing) motor for the lightweight RWD coupe in 2011 or 2012.

However long you cut it? So pretty much, it's worth about as much as I put into it, correct?

Totally built N/A can get you 300whp mark. But will cost thousands. Probably 3-4 times more than it would cost to swap a wrx motor and a few bolt ons and a tune. And 2 times more than swapping a STi with exhaust and tune.

Well I'm not looking for totally built, so 300hp isn't really an option lol
