View Full Version : What is this header, who makes it, is it worth it?

Came off a 2002 Impreza 2.5RS, supposedly sounded REALLY good (not sure of what he had for a catback), and SHOULD fit my car.

Is this a custom one-off? I've never seen a Subaru header like this, and the cat (high-flow) is welded on.
Can/did get it for a good price, but if I can't/shouldn't put it on, I need to know.
Keep in mind I need a midpipe, and might have a Borla lined up. Just need to find an axle-back.
What do ya's think?

TWE = tech works engineering.
It's the best header for power gains.

Will that work with my 97 BG? If so how much am I looking at for one and how hard is it to find the rest of the pipe to go with the Borla cat back?

I'm sure it will perform better, but the cost of the header and to get it here from Australia it isn't worth it. Maybe if you come across a use one in the states like that then go for it.
Here's a pick of a new one. Maybe you should check and exhust shop and see if they can make it for you.

Will it button up perfectly with the Borla catback? Nevermind, I'm sure it would button up perfectly.

I've got a TWE that I picked up used for a good price. Not sure how much the MRT goes for, but a brand new TWE costs about $1,000.
OBX makes an EL header as well, but you will have to have a cat welded in if you have to pass emissions.

I may just take some pics in of that header and have an exhaust shop make it.

Hrm, this (from MRT's website) worries me:
Recommended as a kit including centre pipe and rear muffler, however all parts are available separately if the modification is to be done in stages. Fits factory-mounting points. NOTE Part will not bolt to OE centre pipe
Will it work with the Borla center pipe I may be getting?

I'll have to mock it up. Eyeballing it with the car on the ground it SEEMED like it will work.
Got to find time at work to try it out.
But if I'm dropping the exhaust, might as well throw a new trans mount in there and shifetr bushings and oh crap this car just cost me money again....

And thats not all the mods I will be doing to it. Some of them are a surprise!!!:grin::grin:

I stand completely corrected. A buddy of mine has one hanging in his garage, they used it on their auto-x car for a couple of seasons and then it's been off ever since.
You do need a custom-fabbed mid-pipe.

maybe for now I will just buy the already made parts and then later one get one of those custom fabbed up to replace the header and high flow cat section.

Well if the midpipe I MIGHT be getting won't work, I'll just sell the MRT and get a Borla knock off, or just deal with the Borla mid and an axle-back.
Any idea what these are worth used? I'd obviously clean it up and re-paint it before I sold it.

Not sure what they go for used. I haven't seen one for sale used yet. I don't think there are many over here, but a few. I remember Pat Olsen (NASIOC) I think it was him, could be wrong) having it at some point.

You should install it with a custom mid-pipe. if you don't like it, take it off and sell it, you'll get more for it that way because it'll have a midpipe that fits.
These things are rare. I think MRT have basically stopped production.
Plus they have to be imported from Australia.
Kinda like morettes.

You think my stock muffler will flow enough to take advantage (power and or sound wise) of it, or should I get an axle-back either way?
STi and WRX axle-backs fit with no mods, correct?

Get an axle-back.
STi & WRX axle-backs require hanger modification and flange rotation. Both of which is easy for an exhaust shop to do if you're having a custom midpipe made up too.

It will sound like a honda with that header. But it's unique on it's own, get it.

After youtubing TWE NA headers, I found a vid of a Legacy with an OBX header that still had the boxer rumble. It's not as pronounced as with Borlas, but it's still there.
I love my EL's, I'd never trade them for Borlas. ;) But mine are also coated, so when I eventually go turbo, I'll get better performance.

This isn't a TWE header. And the MRT and TWE are two different designs.

Yes, but they're both EL, and both should sound some the same.

except that they don't. Just because they're EL has nothing to do with the final sound - the lengths and curves do a lot more than just feed exhaust gas.
The MRT header has a x-over pipe - the "H" configuration, plus some T sections which have right angles.
The TWE header has far more curves.

I'm still gonna bolt it up, just to se how it sounds. That might make up my mind to get a custom cat-back fabbed up.
OOOORRRRRR......
I could use the Borla cat and midpipe I picked up today for cheap, along with a stock axle back and manifold that I will probably never use, but they were free so.......

Have a cat back custom fabbed and never look back. There are lots of shops around here that can do that for a reasonable dime.
Or sell all that trash to me. Cheap.
Seriously, I want to hear a clip when it's done, it will likely retain some "boxer rumble", ever hear a flat 4 VW bug older Porsche or even a 4 cyl. Gold Wing sound like an inline? I can't place the reason why but, flatties just never do.

*Update* Ben, the offer is off the table, I installed my OBX header this past weekend. FWIW it lost a lot of "boxer rumble" which I don't really like much anyway.
I find the design of the MRT header a bit curious actually, kind of a tri-y with a crossover. As an actual tri-y without a crossover, most engines will see an increase in low to midrange torque, making a crossover seem redundant.

is there any headers on the market for the single exhaust port ej22?

I'm still around...... just been driving the car, not doing much to it. Planning on resealing my leaky rear baffle tonight or tomorrow and installing my group N trans mount.
Annnnnd I'm not using the MRT header. Probably going to throw it up on the FS board and/or eBay tonight.
