1st question. On the 3.90 Subaru XT 5MT Dual Range trans is it 4lo/4hi or is it 2wd/4wd?

2nd question. Would I get better towing capabilites from the WRX 4.44 or from the STI 6MT than the 3.90 dual range (if it i 4hi/4lo)?

Well, the dual range has a 4 low, which will be best to get you started, but after that, you have to use your regular gears anyway, unless you want to be whacking your rev limit (and blowing the trans up anyway) at 40 mph.

The WRX with 4.444 is going to be slightly shorter than stock. A WRX with 3.9's will be longer than stock.

I'd be surprised if the dual range tranny will survive having a modded EJ25 pumping power through it, still. ;)

Between the 6mt and the 5mt which one will have a higher top end? Is the first gear on the 6mt lower than the one on the 4.444 5MT?

6th gear, on a stock 6MT, will top out at 167. That's with 3.9 gears. First gear tops out at 35 mph.

A WRX gearbox with 4.444's will top out fifth at 147. But first gear will top out at 30 mph.

So the 6MT won't give me better low end TQ then.

WRXs don't come with 4.44s? Only time I've seen a 4.44 on a Subaru is on an automatic transmission. (Edit: USDM - apparently they were found on JDM WRXs)

2004-2006 STi: 1st gear is 3.636 with a 3.9 final drive.
2001-2005 WRX: 1st gear is 3.454 with a 3.9 final drive.
2006-2007 WRX: Same but with 3.7 final drive

Looks like the STi's transmission will give you a shorter 1st gear.

I'm not looking for a shorter first gear. I'm looking for the best low end TQ on a trans. If anyone knows anything about the 3.90 trans off of a Subaru XT where it is a dual range please tell me everything about it.

If you mean , like the old wedge shaped cars, neither XT's nor XT6's ever came with a dual range. Dual range tranny's came in these flavors;
--GL Wagon/sedan 85-90 - dual range 5 speed - Front wheel drive/4WD hi/ 4WD lo - The 4WD modes on these are center locked and can't be used on pavement without causing bind
--RX Sedans and Coupes - dual range AWD 5 speed - AWD hi/AWD lo - This trans did provide a AWD system similar to what is on your legacy.

Neither of these tranny's will bolt up to your engine without an adapter plate. They also use differently splined axles.

Here is a link to most 5 speeds that will bolt to an EJ engine along with the gear ratios.

This site; http://www.pcvsoftware.net/applet.html allows you to enter gear ratios and tire sizes and it will give you resulting speeds at various RPM's.

I'll check out those transmissions and if I have any questions I will ask yall. One question tho, which transmission would give me the best low end TQ which will put the least amount of strain on the engine? The WRX 5MT or the STI 6MT or the Forester 5MT 4.444?

Anyone know how much one of these transmissions go for?

Can someone explain what Viscous (4kgf) means as far as transmissions go?

4kg (4000grams) is the spring pressure before the viscous clutch starts to break free and slip. the viscous clutch is like a limited slip but uses a gel (reacts to tempature) instead of springs for pressure

as for price on a ra tranny is going to be around $3000-$4000. the ra comes with DCCD and would be hard to wire in to your legacy

The reason why I want it is because it has a 3.083 first gear. If I get the one with the viscous clutch which doesn't have DCCD I would still swap out the clutch with a racing clutch and light weight flywheel and be fine right?

Make sure the final drive of your transmission matches your rear diff.

Make sure the final drive of your transmission matches your rear diff.Don't worry I will. It ain't hard to find a 4.444 rear diff in the US. The hardest thing tho is finding the exact transmission that I am looking for.
