07-25-2008, 10:07 AM
To me, $2 because I'm not a fan of the design, but I think they look good anyway. ;)
If you sell them, throw them up on Nasioc.com or RS25.com.
Those guys are parts whores, regardless of the look. I bet if you throw some Japanese stamps in the boxes they'd stick them on the car.
17x7 is plenty wide for a BG - the rear wheel wells are not the biggest, so you'd need a decent roll+pull job to fit something bigger...but you probably have that in the plans anyway.
What's the cost to own a 10+ year car in Japan? I thought it was pretty expensive?

Those are nice rims but not a good color for your car. Silver gunmetal like Roger said would look good. But I bet you plan on putting on some big dirty ass rims anyway to scare the children of Japan with lol

i paid 1200 for it, and it has inspection till next year.
500 bucks or so for reinspection and im good for 2 years.
not sure what its gonna go on it, figured out 9 +25 with a healthy roll and pull will do its.

That's not bad. Are there big tax advantages to buying new cars or something? I'm trying to work out why the export market for Jap-spec vehicles to Australia & New Zealand is such big business.
9" wide w/ 25 offset is going to RUIN the wheel bearings. Just FYI. Lowest I would go for offset on a Subaru is 35, and that would be for show only.

Race-spec wheel bearings... and the fact that they probably replace them or tear them down after every event.
Wheel bearing failure on Subaru's is well-documented, it's usually attributed to age, but obviously aggressive offsets will accelerate this.

ill keep a spare set around
but really, at least 8.5s are going on the car
i have 215/40 ona 17x7, decent tires....and its just not enough grip
Huffer
07-25-2008, 11:30 AM
Not enough grip? Get new tyres and a little more neg. camber on
The increased contact patch from a wider tyre/wheel combo isn't as noticeable as better rubber and better alignment settings.
Don't forget the performance degradation from running a heavier tyre/wheel set too. You'll probably throw some forged lightweight wheels on though to combat this.
But hey, looking forward to seeing what you come up with.

can i run an 8 front and 9 rear without problems with AWD....is ther ea % of rolling diameter i need to stay within or will the center diff compensate

07-25-2008, 12:35 PM
I remember reading that the rolling circumference needs to be within 1/4" or something silly like that.
Wide should be OK, but I never though my car could handle tires that wide - are you putting flares on those fenders?
It kills me that I can get a totally clean car from the Junkyard in Japan that somebody PAID to junk for $500. I changed cars every year when I lived there. The hard part was seeing the 'base dealers' selling the $500 Integra for $2500. People just don't know when they first get there.
Keep thos pics coming!
grant you know I looked into the stagger... problem is, you have a 1/4 tolerance as far as rolling circumferences is concerned, but the weight difference is going to kill the center diff... from all account I've found anyways... anywho... the cashmere yellow... yummy... you should get yourself some advan RS in the gunmetal finish for it... that would be sexy.
PS... I like seeing pictures of the porch without my parts on it

interesting
only reason i ask is there is a good deal on VSXX up here
Also, is there an offset DIFFERENCE between the front and rear?
I knwo you guys mostly get the same offsets all around, but i were to put like 23 on the rear on a 17x8 and a 17x8 +32 on the front.
i notice that on a few leggys i have see, the fronts are pretty flush while the rears are kinda sunken in. and i want to make sure maybe they dont just have spacers in teh front or wahtever.

it wont be that extreme
at that camber i had to literally check my tires before i went to work, and when i got home to make sure they would work the next day
i always had 4 spare wheels with tires on them with around the same offsets (so count TWO pairs of super low offset wheels) in case i had to replace one. I cahnge all my own tires, and have a crap ton of tires left oer.
BUT i am done with that style for meow, so expect normal camber on it, but a big pull/roll before we paint it semi flat black

Like Shane said, people in the subaru community really fear change/difference, even though we have one of the most diverse communities I've ever been a part of. Anything outside of "normal" is wrong. Look at D-Money's Pink Advans over on NASIOC. Very few of us liked that, and it was just a wheel color. Something different from the Bronze, gunmetal, silver, gold, and so on. The way I see it, everyone has their own style and own likes...from cars, to women, to jobs. Do what you love and be happy with it. One of you likes the VIP style. The other likes the simple, sporty daily driver. I have mad respect for both styles and no matter which you like, you should both be able to respect the amount of work put into each other's cars, whether you like the finished product or not. THAT is what makes a true car-guy.

hahahahaha... you can find 15 thousand of those all over the internet and it's not that hard in the first place....
sybir
08-01-2008, 05:19 PM
A DIY for that is scary, because you need the right tools and a bit of expertise; it's not hard but it takes time and doing it right without requiring repainting is an art.
It's the same reason I don't like lending out my fender roller; last guy I gave it to unsupervised literally separated his rear unibody (as in, see the wheel from the trunk) and was begging me for help on how to fix it.....heh.
wagonofdoom
08-01-2008, 07:01 PM
yeah, basically the way i am doing it is cutting slits in the fender lip, becuase subarus have such a weak metal fender anyways so it wont put stress on it in more than one way. Then on the rear you roll the inner fender UP and THEN out, and then move down to the actual fender lip. I use a blowtorch (fuck heat guns) to soften the inside metal, as that is stronger than the actual fender metal. rolling a fender for looks is super easy. Rolling it for CLEARANCE is a different story.
i rolled my fenders on the cedric and you cant even tell
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2008/08/2112752936_295ca172f7-1.jpg
it takes alo of patience. I am expecting to spend around 3 hours on the rear fenders alone with a grinder, body hammers and dollys and my roller.
yeah, I'm finally gonna HAVE to break out the fender roller on the suby I think... grant, how about you call me sometime when I'm not moving a huge plasma screen TV or you aren't looking for bike parts... oh yeah, hey I'll PM you on zilvia about some shit.

Came out nice, Grant. It looks like you pulled the fronts as well, did you just toss the fender liners? That's the only thing keeping me from doing my fronts, I still do snow and don't want to ditch 'em and I can't see a good way to keep them in place without doing a piece of flashing up inside the fender lip or something...
fender liners are for vagina hating men...ie gay people.
they dont do anything. all your wires are loomed, and no electonics i could find are exposed if you remove them.
mine were thrown away the DAY i bought the car like i do with every car.
fronts the lips were hammered flat but that is all. nothing else. no rubbing yet that i can find except in the rear becuase the left side isnt as far out as the right.
but i can fix that

I play in the snow and don't like packing the arches full, or slinging rocks at my fenders (had a crapload of star cracks on my drift Leg, since it was too low to run liners).
No electronics are exposed, but I don't like looms hanging out and I'm too lazy to rerun them inside the inner fender on a daily (since my daily gets 35-40k on it per year, a rubbing situation turns into a PITA situation pretty quick).
I figured you did the fronts, you can see it in the pics, I've just seen some people play with stretching liners with heat guns, etc and was curious if you did anything to keep 'em.
Anyways, back to the car. Still planning on painting it?

It's commonly called Cashmere Yellow. Not the same as Sonic/Blaze Yellow from the 02 WRX. No idea on paint code, not too many places have it.

I don't think so. Japspec cars tend to get the higher power outputs, nicer alloy suspension bits and typically better interior bits. None of the US or Pacific built cars ever came with auto climate control until 2005. Japspec cars have had that since 1998.
Oh, DCCD in the mid-late 90s was nice too, not to mention the abundance of sub-compact models to mess with. There's just no variety in the US market. Everythings about big SUVs, trucks and luxury sedans.

Fox body Mustangs are great for drifting. However, what's the difference between the USDM spec Mustang and the JDM one? Other than the wheel on the opposite side.
Huffer, I understood what you meant. USDM spec built Japananese cars ARE a bit under powered in comparison to their JDM twins.

ok, so everything fits. now i have to trim the front fender, and cut the rear, bend and weld it together. I decided against molding the flares for NOW. i have inspection in feb, and the flares will bump me up a plate meaning more insurance, and more road tax each year. so if i leave it like this, i can just take em off and pass inspection with teh cut fenders.
put the wing on too. we shall see if it does a damn thing

plut it looks bad ass
I bet it plants your ass end at high speeds... I gotta think the roofrack bars would help create some sort of wind current and would exaggerate it too... can't wait to tell results... paint the sides of the wing, the cedric was white... subaru is yellow... hahahaha

coilovers are blown and came with the car, the set im going to get are like 600 used.
the wheels are the expensive part, 1100 for hte 57ds or 1700 for hte varianzas depending on what i order (yeah i still didnt go through with an order yet...im undecided)

Part of the overall issue (and part-envy that we have) is that JDM deals are so much easier for you to get because of where you are... For us, that kit or even just the car is in the hundreds, if not thousands. Right now the only "factory finish" GTB conversion is still selling for $11k. To buy one for $800 is ridiculous and makes no sense for any of us here.

yeppers, which is why in part alot of people cant really understand why i do what i do.
Cars i do this to, my 180, cedric, stagea, i got for les htan 3500.00 for hte car. At that price it is pretty much expendable. i can do whatever and not feel bad when i blow it up, or run it into a wall.
i mean, as you can see i havent spent alot of money. its just a matter of finding deals over here.

He likes pushing the envelope. People like that tend to be slightly abrasive and don't have patience for those not on board with the end goal.
Don't take it personally. :)
The car is unique... let's see more of that, eh?
:smt023 On the money. After PM'ing Grant direct, I can kinda understand what's going on. Not to mention, the time consumption and effort put into his car and (Me) not realizing that.
I can relate in a sense. Customers at our shop drop thousands into cars they beat the crap outta, and rarely ever see a show. After tracking and crashing or getting rid of a car after the season, they come back to build a more practical car for their application. I'm not saying that's the case here, but the "behind the scene" is similar.
There are plenty of people here pushing the envelope with something different, but not many have abrasive attitudes. Something, I guess we don't expect. Hence remembering we're looking at someone who is "unique" and shouldn't be placed in a mold.
Do your thing Grant. It's coming along well.

Says the guy with a non-standard engine in his highly touted "JDM GTB". Puh-leese. It's guys like Grant that would have come up with the single turbo conversion, helping someone like you out.
Without innovation there is no progress. Years ago GTB owners were positively lunching motors left and right. Then someone suggested a single turbo switchover. And here we are.
Grant's not doing anything that hasn't already really been done in some form or another in Japan, and everyone's a groupie for Japan. :P

The new rear bumper should really have the tip cutout eliminated, I think it will bring the tips and rear diffuser together. Ever considered taking off the roof rack? It's starting to look more like the Volvo 850R BTCC wagon back in the day

^^^ I absolutely adore those Volvos!
The rear diffuser looks real mean. I still really miss that amazing yellow color, but the car is coming together very quickly. On the exhaust tips, is there any way to bring them out wider, so that the outside edge of the tip is more in line with the outside edge of the bumper/diffuser? Maybe I should hold off on that comment, as filling in the muffler hole will really help to balance it visually. With that diffuser setup it makes me think how awesome a center exit exhaust would look... Too bad it'd ruin the whole aerodynamics of the diffuser.
Are you keeping your side mirrors stock? Maybe some Ganador aero mirrors or the super small/sleek rally style mirror pods? And I think you might need some rear spats to keep the dirt off that new paint ;) I can see some dirt in your coilover shots, and the track tends to spray a lot nastier/stickier stuff up onto the sides of the car.
