Sick of the damn heatshield rattle... how to get rid of it?

Okay.. I've had it with the heat shield rattle.. makes my car sound like a POS when leaving in low RPM's. What the hell is the purpose of these things? What happens if you take them off? And lastly.. how the HELL did you take YOURS off (if you've done it of course).

I'm sorta starting this thread to get some ideas going on how to STOP the rattle.. so people in the future will have something to look to in order to stop that annoying sound. I've debated cutting them off.. but I'm not sure if i need them or not (especially with winter around here).. and also if it would lead to premature corrosion of the exhaust.

Is it bad to be running with no heat shield tho.. and will it cause premature rusting to occur on the pipes? Hmm.. I think I will just have to unbolt them.. but do you have to pull the exhaust off to do that.. or do the bolts only go one way?

I did it to my GT with no problems. The bolts may snap and you will have to cut. I don't remember taking the exhaust off. I haven't taken them off this one yet, no problems yet.

Yeah, mine just started recently getting more annoying.. do you know without taking them off if there is any other way to get them to shut the hell up? I was thinking about maybe using some type of liquid gasket or some shit to put in between the cracks of the heat shield.. or would that just be dumb?

I couldn't get the ones off my friends car so she wanted me to spray the dynamat liquid stuff on there and I did just that.

I stuck some bolts in my per my friend's request (he did the same on his 2.5RS) but it is a temporary solution. They fall out.

Gonna pull the shields off next time it's in the air (hrm, gotta change the oil today) or not even worry about it because I got that header that was SUPPOSED to go on today, but the damn dealer in town didn't get my group-n mounts in stock yet. :cry:

When I had a service done to my Legacy I asked the dealership if they knew anything that could be done about the sound. They said sure, and when I got the car back the rattle was gone.

Curious, I went and looked at what they did and to my amusement they actually used wood screws between the header and the heat shield. It works, but I was a little surprised to see the dealership use such a hack.

All the same, the other day when one of them started rattling again I found the screw had come out, so I put a longer screw in that tucked in better and the sound was gone again.

I'm not proud. :neutral:

The free stock manifold I picked up has muffler clamps all over it to stop the rattle, you could try that as well. :lol:

do the heat shields affect performance at all? Will removing them ever warp the drive shaft or anything?

Teh drive shaft has it's own shield.

Heat shields for the freaking LOSS. I pulled mine off, except for the one on my cat, because I cannot get my O2 sensors out and they're holding it on.

they did it with my car they just screw them between two parts of the headshield to take up the room and stop the rattle. you can also use worm claps. there are no real effects to no heatsheilds unless you park in a tall field. you might smell the grass burning on you cat

i got all of mine of except the header sleeve ones , just unbolt and pull a little . the only one i would leave would be the one in the rear where the muffler sits ,

i was guna do a schuylkill county fix it by wrapping it with duct tape but it gets way too hot



any way to actually stop it without cutting or taking it apart?

There's about another 1.5" of that screw behind the shield and the head is physically blocked by the joint in front of it. So it's fairly secure there and you eliminate the rattle.

There's no real benefit to removing it, but a benefit to keeping it has been stated. It could potentially reduce the chance of grass fires when parking in fields and by proxy, the burning of your own car.

The screw thing is how most dealerships fix the heatshield rattle. I think Subaru even suggests it (ghetto as it may sound).

it rained really bad last night....went to put the screws in today and the ramps sank in the driveway about an inch....i dont trust those but its all i got

i worked on my car on the ramps a couple months ago in the yard and it drizzled for like 5 mins....the ramps sank in the ground about 4 inches with me under them.....i would like not to be crushed by my car
i live with my car and ill die by my car but not until its fixed and looks nice

My mechanic did something similar with the screw through the heat shield. No more rattle. Function over looks.

GTDrifter - Just a suggestion with the ramps, put a piece of plywood down under the ramps before you pull the car onto it. It'll help prevent the sinking.
