View Full Version : Broken strut?

Last night on my way home I heard a slight thump. Nothing loud, but I only noticed it because my radio was off at the time. I'm pretty sure it's the rear strut. It hits hard when I hit a bump. I can take the tire and move it almost freely. It's been raining so I haven't looked. It also might be the strut mount bolts snapped. I don't know, has anyone hear about a strut snapping or the strut mounts.

Might be your wheel bearing and strut. Do you notice your car jerk a little when turning a certain direction? And if you are feeling bumps hit harder on that one side and your car bottom out on that side then take the nut off the strut and wiggle the car. If the strut hits bottom then then you know its the strut. Maybe not take the nut off but just loosen it almost all the way and see if it falls when you wiggle the car side to side. If it doesn't do anything and you can't pull it down then just jack up the one side and if the whole wheel wiggles side to side then its your wheel bearing. Let us know the results. I think you may have both a wheel bearing and blown strut.

I can tell you right now it's not the wheel bearing. it's the strut, I just don't know specific what is wrong with it. Maybe it just blew, but still doesn't explain how I can shake the whole tire 2-3 inches.

It could be a bad wheel bearing. Make sure your wheels are tight too.

I'll put money on it, it's not the wheel bearing.

I'll put money on it, it's not the wheel bearing.Since I am broke right now I will put down a $1 for the bet. You match it and then tell us what the problem is after you get it done.

Shane, if it's not the wheel bearing then take the wheel off and get a look under and see what's snapped. Get the interior out and check the top hats too.

I have it up now, I can compress the strut with little effort. So I assume it just blew. I'm going to get to cheap struts for the rears. Usually I would do the struts, springs and tops hats what I wanted. But I'm going to do coilovers and I don't have the money lying around for coilovers right now. :-(

Here are some pics of the busted strut, it broke the weld right at the top.

Oh yea I knew they were bad. This one popped on Sunday night when I was taking a corner, not fast, but not normal driving. Right after that, thats when it was slamming every time I hit a bump. I like to do coilovers soon, but don't have the money for them, so I just bought some Monroe senatracks for the rear. The fronts need to be replaced too. But I did the rears myself, and I don't want to do this again. The time it takes me to do this, vs the money I save I think I am better off having a shop do it and a lign my car up afterwards.
