Rubber roof trim cracked and disintegrated

One section of the black rubber trim on the edge of my Legacy Outback roof has cracked and disintegrated. Rather than have the trim replaced, I want to take off the small rust spots and paint the uncovered metal with multiple layers of flat black Rustoleum.

Has anyone else tried this and, if so, what have the results looked like?[/i]

You can do this, but you should still consider replacing the trim over the new paint. Rust is very hard to stop. :(
