rear door damage

on my 97 legacy sedan

someone hit the rear right door.

and the door is now bent and binds on plastic piece in the door way.

what does this plastic piece do? what would happen if i took it off. (temporarily)

That's part of the door catch.

you can get rid of it until you get a new door. it help stiffen the unibody frame and make the side impact accident safer
