So I've got this peculiar problem with my car that I've had since I bought it and I wonder if you could help me shed some light onto what might be causing it.
Basically when I'm cruising in the higher RPM's if I let my foot off the gas and engine brake for a bit then put my foot back on the gas I get a single backfire out the exhaust.
I know the injectors shut off when you're decelerating in a gear until you put your foot back on the gas, so I wonder if there's a lean or rich condition for a second that's making that pop.
What's your thoughts/questions?

Do you have a non-stock exhaust? The popping is unburnt fuel being ignited in the exhaust.
You might also have a hole in the exhaust pipe that is replicating the sound.

the car had an aftermarket catback when I got it. Now it's got a custom 2.25" catback with a vibrant muffler and borla replica header, all the gaskets are new the only part of the exhaust that's stock is the cat section.

Yeah it's probably because of that. Check for exhaust leaks though.

Completely normal, embrace the backfire, enjoy it :D

It's not even lots of backfires though which would be cool, it's just one very specific backfire lol

It's not a real backfire, it's just popping. Don't worry about it. Even my old engine popped once in a while with the 2.5" catback.

I never had any popping until I put on my axle back, it happens. Same thing with my old GT. I guess it has something to do with the larger piping. The exhaust being extracted is exiting at a different rate of speed and volume than it was original designed to.

mine pops all the time, but I have a leak right where the manifold connects to the cat pipe.

You should hear my car... Now running an STi ECU, wasted spark (so same as you guys with the coil packs) and a 3"-straight-through-catless-turbo-back. The decel is just a constant steam of mean splutters, gurgles and pops

I have a 2.5" cat-back, and I get a few pops on the decell. Normal as far as I can tell. If you listen closly on a stock exhaust, you can still hear a few very muffled pops. Let her gurgle and scare the old folks!

I think they pop even with the stock exhaust, it's just so muffled that it goes unnoticed.
My car does it too, and I like it.
