I will buy another Subaru...It just has to be right. Right car, right time, right price, right location.

I've had more Subarus than most everyone on here.

I've had DL/GL's, Loyales, Legacys, a justy an RX....

I'm eyeballing a RHD gen1 wagon right now but I don't know if my wife is going to let me get it. I think she will if I promise to sell my truck.

to clear things up, dont think im a guy who would put a f*cking body kit on. no. my car has 13" steelies, dents and shit, i could really care less. my 95 impreza coupe has a legacy turbo swap and its in its first few stages. i am rewiring it now, and found an OBS which ill be taking all the awd stuff and rear suspension to make my car AWD since i roasted the FWD clutch with the new engine.

Natoe- I didn't take any offense (or not very much, I guess :P) but I guess you tweaked a nerve with Shane and 2DL...an Impreza with an EJ22t swap is something to behold. Certainly better than a WRX, and probably as good as an STi (IMO, those blocks rock). I really respect you for what you've done (although I'd like to see some pics :twisted:).

I put a supercharged LT1 into a gen2 RX-7 with a tubed chassis.

Then I had kids....wait! I did the engine swap on my 90 BJ after my second son was born.

Hmmm, I guess if I'd read a little slower I would've gotten this one, and would've been more pissed off. But I won't be anyways, because those are mods. Sure, I don't have a swap (frankly, NA Power is cooler anyways) but that's because I can't afford it! I do little creative things that cost me next to nothing, and I take pride in it. So Sorry if I don't have TWE Streetcams, A fidanza flywheel, tein coilovers, and complete Exhaust!

it weighs too much? I think the only difference in weight should be the engine and the drivetrain (tranny and AWD system). I would say swap the engine into the OBS. We had a 99 OBS, and it was a really fun car. I liked the grille better than the older 'prezas too ;)

And find yourself some silicone hosing to replace that duct tape/can intake :?

well the OBS is 2850 stock, while the impreza is 2400. my impreza is a base model, has no extra weight like PW, PD, 2 less doors, is a little sportier (even though i love the way the OBS looks too). i agree with you about the grille, but i think im going to swap over the headlights, grille, and hood to my impreza. off colored but i dont really care.

bout the intake.. a guy i know from NASIOC and legacycentral.org is getting me an airbox for the legacy turbo which will bolt on to either impreza. there arent any leg turbs in the junkyards around here so yeah...

mark- i guess your right about the 2400 lbs, thats for FWD, but AWD doesnt add 400 pounds, probably just 100 more then FWD id guess. so 2500 or 2600ish minus what ive taken out of my car, and its still a lot lighter than a wagon. im guessing the impreza coupe has a lower center of gravity then the wagon. BUT the wagon supports a little more of a sleeper look, and if youve seen any wagons with turbos and an exhaust ( i say that cuz the boxer turbo has more distinct purr then just an NA) its a pretty awesome sight. another problem id have in the OBS is that it is OBDII, i think that makes it quite a bit more difficult to wire. maybe that was just for emissions *shrug* im in oregon so we dont have emmisions tests. thanks for bein somebody i can talk to, hehe

i was thinking the AWD would weigh about 100 lbs more on my car since i have probably removed about 50-100, so a total weight of 2500-2550 im guessing after weight taken out. and yeah- the 95 impreza was the last year of OBDI, (its actually considered OBD 1 1/2, because it was the transition but its as easy as OBDI) thats why the 95 is the sought after impreza to do swaps into, since its the last year of OBDI.

sorry for 'knockin' your rides, i just think its funny that you keep layin down stereotypes on me. (i WAS an ass, but really im not, are we done now? or is 2DL going to ban me anyways?) im not tryin to knock your visual parts either, i dont know what JDM legacy stuff looks like, but anything JDM has got to be better. on my car though, only visual thing id spend $ on is a hood scoop for when i custom intercool it.

Lets start this over...

Hi Natoe...I'm 2DL. I love legacys with a passion but I also buy other cars from time to time. You can ask any "posting" memeber on the board about my obsession with Subarus and they will tell you how crazy I am when it comes to cars.

I will tell you know that it is a PITA to turn a FWD into an AWD. The parts you will need to aquire are astounding. If you have an AWD donor car then you are one step ahead of the game. But if your AWD donor is not the same model as your patient, you will notice it most likely won't bolt up. Therefore putting you in search of more parts. Your car is shorter than an OBW so therefore you will have to outsource a shorter driveshaft. You will also need to make sure that your transfer is geared the same as your rear diff.

Just removing the rear diff from a Roo is a PITA! I know.

Please enjoy your time on the board...just don't try to bend our members out of shape.

hey, well i can say im obsessed as well, my friends get annoyed when all i talk about is cars, and especially subarus. i spend way too much time on forums, im mostly on NASIOC- thats where i learned everything. started checking out legacy forums since i got a legacy engine.

i didnt know that was true about different lengths...? i thought that since its an impreza outback sport its the same, and thought id done my research on that.. not POSITIVE though. isnt it the same chassis? i know the hood will fit once you change over to the newer headlights as well. matching the diff and tranny wouldnt be a problem since they are both from the same car. this is the first driveline work on a subaru ive done. ive looked around at junkyards and for the most part it seems like rear suspension is the same, even in early legacies, as the impreza. i know i need odd parts like the fuel tank, fuel seperator, etc, but dont you think ill have everything necessary since i have the whole car? worst case scenario, i have to put my engine in the OBS and wire it up there which would be a PITA.

IMO....put your engine in the OBW. It's sooooo much easier. You can use the stock computer (unless it was a turbo) but for the most part it will bolt/wire up.

You have done EJ swaps before, you should know they come out in about 30 minutes.

When you put your engine in the OBW, change the motor mounts (STi) and clean up the engine bay while you have it out.

Put an EJ25 (phase 2) in to the impreza...true sleeper.

if i put it in the EJ22T into the OBS, it wont wire right up. i have to swap ecus, harnesses, splice crap in, its OBDII so it would be hard.

i was running the turbo motor on my NA1.8L ECU and it was really rough and bad (i dont reccommend doing that). taking out the engine is easy enough. im sure the tranny wont be hard, rear suspension is a little more tricky but very doable. (even rear shocks are different in the 2WD)

I think I remembered why I love the gen1's so much.

When I did the EJ20 DOHC sawp into my 90 BJ, I just had to change over a few sensors (japan doesn't use certain ones) and extended some of the sensor leads but for the most part it was a snap!

Check to see if most of the sensors from your EJ22 are that same as what came out of the OBW. YOu might be able to just change out some of the sensors.

I wouldn't rule out the swap untill you have checked all your options.

We know it will bolt up. If they are both N/A then you can retain your stock ECU in the OBW. I kept the SOHC EJ22 ECU when I put the DOHC EJ20 into the BJ and it never gave me any problem. The only time you have to swap ECU's is if you are going turbo. (could be wrong but I doubt it)

Edit: Come to think of it I had to swap over the harness from the EJ22 because the EJ20's had been cut off. It was still easy. Put the OBS engine on a stand, pull up a chair and remove the harness and sensors. Then do the same with the EJ22. Then install the sensors and harness from the OBS while you have it on the stand and can take your time. (thats what I did)

i think it will be a factory conversion. remember, subarus are like legos.
my car despite having different rear end components, still has all of the mount up points of everything that the AWD cars do. should be as simple as taking off my x-member, putting the OBS on. there isnt any wiring with the transmission (5spd). same thing with the rear suspension.

also another reason i dont want to put it in the OBS is that id have to get the right front fender fixed, since it is massacred into the wheel well quite a ways.

anybody know the difference of wiring into OBDI vs OBDII?

My 90 BJ had electronicly controlled AWD. Bet that OBS is too...

There is a fuse holder under the hood of all AWD roos so that you can install it and shut off the AWD in case your vehicle needs to be towed or FWD dyno'ed.

I am willing to bet it is tied into the TCU.

i am almost 100% sure that the imprezas, including the OBS, don't have a TCU. should be a direct swap. (think about all the computer would control in the tranny... electricity can only do so much!)

the 5MT versions are not electronically controlled...

2DL, the autos have that fuse, but there's no way to do it on a manual tranny, its all mechanical (50/50 power split) on a 5MT

i really dont think it will be much of a PITA.... the mechanical part is the fun part, the only PITA will be rewiring my engine to the correct ECU. i had a blast doing the engine swap, despite breaking a tap off in my car.... getting spilled on etc, it was awesome, im looking forward to getting to do this.

Rabid- First of all, we love all subarus, but the focus is on the legacy. Second of all, the EJ22T (the engine Natoe has) is a Legacy SS engine (91-94) and therefore applies to the Legacy.

We have a couple of SVX and Impreza owners here too...

impreza thread? heeell yeah. thats where id hang out. not to sound arrogant anymore, but i know quite a bit about imprezas, way more than i do about legacys.... *hint* oh yeah your probably still upset with me, i understand. i know my way in and out of the the compatabilities, swaps (soon more), and general JDM models etc. i duno, itd be cool.

man bug off, i said im sorry. having a legacy with a small block chevy would be hilarious. but its not subaru.
i have an impreza, with one of the neatest legacy engines subaru made. its not astonishing, but i also enjoy the more grown up appeal of legacys. imprezas and legacys were both built for the same reason, rally, and came in the same trim packages, L, etc. and now dont be the one who cant get along with subaru enthusiasts. dont be hatin the prez!
