Is the 2.5L motor in a 99 Impreza RS the same as the motor in my 97 legacy GT?

both open deck and all that jazz?

No. The 99 is a SOHC, the 97 is DOHC.

Different compression ratios, and different intake. 99 is MAP, 97 is MAF.
