I purchased this vehicle at the end of summer 2008 from a NASIOC'er in Des Moines, IA. It was listed on craigslist and NASIOC for quite some time but I think people were afraid to buy it! Not I! It is quite the vehicle to say the least and it deserves its nickname of "Frankenstine." On to the pics of when it was brand new to me, taken on the way home from Des Moines.

The car needs to be tuned but OBD1 is somewhat limiting my tuning abilities. If anyone has any recommendations I will gladly listen.

Eh, I wouldn't mind dynoing it but it probably wont happen anytime soon. If I ever get around to getting it tuned we will probably do a baseline pull.

As for the hood scoop insert, I have one, it sits in the trunk. That insert makes the scoop much smaller and right now I've got it opened up for better airflow.

I was wondering about that however it is winter now and both my rad fans come on together I think so I haven't noticed any difference in temp. I don't run with the lightbar on all the time but I had it on for two weeks straight. I'll wait and see in the summer but I think I'll have a different light setup by then :cool:

I hadn't seen that front skid before; I had one off a Japanese GT that wrapped up and around but it was completely wrong for the OB and wouldn't have fit without a bracket at least 6 inches tall to reach factory mounting points. Is that a Subaru part or something aftermarket? I want! :D

As far as I know it is a factory Subaru part. I bought it from JHot and it was listed as a JDM Subaru Legacy skidplate. The back of the skidplate bolted directly to the crossmember plate area under the drive axles. I had to get creative with mounting points in the front but it works fine. I made it attach to the bumper cover itself. It is definitely for a Legacy as the holes line up in such a manner that I do not even need to remove it to drain the oil. Very handy!

They are stock size for a WRX which is 205/55/16. The Outback requires a taller tire so if you run a height of 55 on a 16" rim your speedo and odo will be off by a little bit. This is the case for me and with my 4.11 gearing I turn a tad bit higher rpm on the highway.

Swapped the gunmetal WRX rims for 2.5RS 6-spokes with Toyo all-seasons. Those of you who saw my last photoshoot from the page previous will remember the SCCA decals on the doors and back hatch, those are gone. I added an STLsubaru sticker and a turbosnail of my own design when the SCCA graphics came off.
This shoot is nothing special, just a few quick snaps in some beautiful lighting at a location that I would love to do a better shoot at.

I think they looked fantastic once they were painted and they would be perfect to mount snow tires to being that they are 6.5" wide instead of 7" like my RS wheels. I'll probably keep them around for the purpose of putting snow tires on them as the RE92's are pretty much thrashed.

I built an aluminum heatshield for the wagon as well as modified a stock WRX TMIC splitter (thanks Phil) to fit the Legacy hood. Both mods are working great and I think I'll make a second heatshield/airbox for the short ram on my RS. Short ram intakes are known for getting heatsoaked and this mod will allow the fender plug opening to dump outside air into this closed off area helping to combat heatsoak.

I appreciate it. A good friend of mine told me that you can't Rally at 100% in a vehicle you are attached to. This wagon takes abuse like you wouldn't believe. The sway to the nose is from a tweaked bumper beam caused by a minor collision with a tree last fall. Upon close inspection for any damage I discovered the bumper beam under the bumper cover was red, not green like the majority of the car. So its not the first time the car has smacked something on the front end. Additionally, the whole bumper is held on with 4 zip ties, as is the front grill. A new bumper beam is on my to do list.

Well, a lot has happened with the car since my last update. I've kept quiet about it for the most part because I wanted it to be a surprise. A grand unveiling of sorts. Those of you who remember my car or scrolled up to look at my last update will know that my car is green (mostly) with a red drivers door and white hatch. Hence the name "frankenwagon." NO LONGER! Not currently. But I bought them from that one kid on here that had like 17 cars at once and was doing an Impreza front end conversion on his Legacy and was doing JDMlegacy chick. I think they are JDM legacys old lights. So I'm assuming they are the regular JDM chrome lights that have been baked and painted.

I got window rainguards today! They aren't the JDM ones, these are actually for an 01+ Legacy but its all that Advance Auto Parts could order. No companies make them for the 1997 body style. These fit just fine though.

I want them so bad but JDM ones are a fortune by the time they are shipped here(if they make it in one piece), and I totally agree with you about no aftermarket companies making them for the 95-99 Legacys.

I've actually been leaving notes on any 95-99 Outbacks I see locally that have them on(back when they were a factory option) seeing if they want to sell them :) No luck yet :(

I'm assuming but I don't really know. My car is wired at the ECU plug like an EJ22T so I was just gonna get a PNP MS for a 91-94 Legacy turbo.

right now i live about 30 minutes north of Palm Beach and about an hour and change north of Ft. Lauderdale. Not much of a car scene at all around here. maybe a little bit in palm beach, but not here. im moving up to orlando to attend a university up there this summer, and i probably be there until i graduate. Im stoked because that is the place to be in florida when it comes to a car scene.

ive never made it up to PCola but i heard its pretty nice.

but down here ESPECIALLY, legacy's are SO looked down upon. only few people know about subarus, and the people who do think anything but an impreza is a joke. :evil: :smt019 so im pretty excited to get my car done, its paint, its power, and show all these kids whats up

Update! Moved my A/C controls down to the top DIN slot with some major modification to the radio bracket (read, cutting the crap out of it). Then moved my three gauges from the DIN slot up to where the A/C controls were and put in a new baller Sony head unit! Loving it!

I just fixed a coolant leak today and I'm trying to figure out how to swap out my two OEM fans for a single large 15" fan. I don't really know the direction I want to go with this car, so its nice to hear words of encouragement.

That's just the way old cars are. I can only think of 2 fluids my car doesn't leak - fuel, and coolant. And both of those are because I just fixed it. It's even leaking windshield wiper fluid. Unlike most old cars though it's unlikely to leave you stranded if you stay on top of things - transportation at its best. Plus once you fix it you know you took care of it - if you buy another car who knows what will go wrong.

The Frankenwagon has fallen victim to a coolant leak / overheating issue. The car leaks coolant like crazy from somewhere on top of the motor impossible to see without removing the intake manifold and TMIC. I am treating it as a head gasket failure unless I find proof of something else.

I'm staying positive and looking at this as an opportunity to build it bigger, better, faster and stronger. I do have my 2.5RS to drive, so its possible this project could stretch out, especially considering the plans I have in mind for it.

Phase 1 include:
1.) pull motor
2.) replace trans seals and a few other wear items
3.) check/replace head gaskets
4.) STI water pump and/or new t-belt
5.) Mishimoto Z-line front mount intercooler
6.) JDM GC8 FMIC piping
7.) battery relocation, wire sorting and ABS unit delete (to make room for FMIC piping)

Phase 2, if I'm feeling spendy
1.) STI injectors
2.) VF39
3.) MegaSquirt standalone EMS

Somewhere in there if I can find a deal on some coilovers I will jump on it. I will probably also be scouring the partouts and junkyards for a rear-LSD, the open Outback rear diff will not cut it if I follow through with Phase 2.

Your install will be much easier than mine, since you don't have an ABS pump sticking into the fender, and a large blower taking up all the spacer in the left side of the engine bay. One thing to make sure to do is order about 7 extra 2.5" couplers and clamps to hold them. I found a set of 10 on ebay for pretty cheap. I'll write exactly how everything worked out tommorow when I'm not using my phone to post.

Mine is 29"x7"x2.5". I actually had to drop it down from the bumper beam about 2.5" inches to get the inlets to line up with the piping.

Yep, I think so too. You will probably have to made a cut and put in a coupler on the driver's side pipe where it snakes around the tow hook, but that shouldn't be a huge problem.

I am throwing around the idea of flipping my intake manifold as well. I don't have an AC compressor so the alt relocation shouldn't be an issue. BTW, when I said in my last post that the Mishimoto was 29x7.5, I meant 28x7.5, so if you can make yours fit I certainly can too. Looking forward to seeing your results, I want to know what all had to be modified to make it work.

Haven't really done a lot except put 2.5RS front springs and perches on to rake the stance and give me more negative camber. Also installed JDM sidemarkers. I am growing tired of this OBD1 EJ122T ECU, I'm gonna be putting a standalone EMS in as soon as I can afford it. I've taken the EJ22T ECU as far as it can go. Putting the car on the dyno in October to get numbers then doing the standalone and re-dynoing it once tuned to see how much more power I can make from a quality tune.

I don't really want to push a lot more boost maybe only a couple more PSI at most, so I'd be happy with 230-240 whp and 250 wtq. That would put me beyond stock WRX territory and on par with some of the slower stock STI's and Evo's out there on a good day, downhill with a tailwind LOL. Still, what more could you ask for out of a 170k mile wagon running less than 15 psi on a smallish turbo.

They are 06 WRX front seats. The rain guards are tricky, just take your time and line them up, once they are stuck they on there so do it right!

Well I finally have an update for the turbo wagon. I still haven't gotten it tuned yet, so its still a slow rich noise beast, but I did rebuild a 2000 2.5RS transmission for it and put it in, along with a new clutch, pressure plate and rear main seal.
I blew up 3rd gear on December 10 and the car sat until yesterday, so pretty much two months. It took me a while to rebuild the trans and get things settled.

The 2.5RS transmission has a taller 5th gear than the Outback trans so I'm already loving my increased fuel milage on the highway. I used the speedo gear from my Outback trans so the speedo is correct even with the RS trans and Outback size tires. Otherwise the gearing in the rest of the gears is identical though.
I turned over 170,000 miles the day I got the car running, but a lot of the parts on this car have been replaced and its still pretty tight for what it is.

I wouldn't say the RS trans is any different than an Outback or Legacy of similar model year. The fact that I blew up 3rd in my Outback transmission tells me I could very easily blow up the RS trans. I plan to change my driving style a bit, plus the fact that the Outback trans had 168k miles on it means it was showing its age. The RS trans I put in has less than 80k on it and I freshened up all the bearings and seals in it.

Yes it is a 4.11 trans. The RS trans is close to any other trans. As I got into it I realized that depending on model year and build date the transmission may have some slight variation from car to car. The synchro design on mine is different from my older Outback trans; it has 3 piece synchro rings on 3rd and 4th, slightly different bearing and nut sizes, variations on the housing design and detent areas, but its just a 4.11 trans like any other. The 5th gear ratio is different. The newer 02 and 03 RS have a taller 2nd gear, which is cool if you want to autoX and get a little more mph out of your gear. Theres a few other differences between transmissions if you research the trans code breakdowns, but the main thing I cared about was getting rid of that terrible gas guzzling factory Outback 5th gear ratio.

Hear hear! A while back I was looking into that very thing as I hate 5th in the OB, and found that 90s-early 2000s Foresters have the same 5th gear as RS's from the GC era. Still looking for a lower mileage RS/Forester tranny...

I'm running a 215/60/16 which is nearly identical overall diameter to the factory 205/70/15 tire size. It is only 0.5% smaller so, just call it a stock size Outback tire.

The RS 5th seems to be a difference of at least 500rpm if not more.

Oh that's nice! In my stock 98 GT, in 5th @ 70mph I'm sitting around 3200rpm, with 205/55/16 (stock) tires.

Nothing really to add. Swapped out the JDM plastic sided coolant overflow tank with a USDM WRX one that doesn't leak. Other than that, just driving it and doing a little bit of research on what I need to do for my standalone EMS. Hoping to have it on MegaSquirt in July.

So i just got a 99OB 5MT to swap out for my 95 leg 5MT, because i Lost reverse and I wanted 4.11s.... Looking at the tranny chart, the sucky OB 5th you're complaining about is a .871 ratio... My old leggo 5th was .780, which is the same as RS, fozzies, etc... BUT the OB is 4.11 and my old leggo was 3.90.. and I'm turning 27" tires so i think the OB's 4.11s should do that better... BUT here's my question (for anyone out there)...

Can I pull the 5th out of my leggo tranny and plug it into the OB tranny, to do what you did with a 4.11 RS 5MT?

Is the 5th gear pressed on and spaced with shims on the bearing, or is it more easily removed?

So the gears are pressed on, but is the 5th easy to get at, or is it buried on the shaft with lots of pressing off and on to do?
also, are there spacers and shims in there to seat things in the right spot or is it just seated next to the synchro? (I'm kind of talking over my head here, but wondering if it's an easy swap or a huge PITA swap)

Honestly man I wish I remembered, I had it all apart a few months ago and used the RS trans without pressing any of the gears off of it. There were a couple things that needed pressed in order for me to get to a bearing a replaced, but I left 5th alone. If you have a press and some jigs to set up to hold the gears while the shaft gets pressed then I'm sure you could do it. FYI though, there's some heavy duty nuts on the shaft that hold everything smooshed together on the shaft and they are one-time use. You will need an impact to get them off and put the new ones back on.

Hmm, I guess that answers it for me then... While on paper it souds better, there will be no 5th swapping for me.
I'll just plug it in and go, once I figure out how to thread the lower starter hole for a stud...

seriously?!! That's a little unnerving yet relaxing at the same time!

BTW, I got more beta on the 5th gear swap dealie-o.... Apparently, 5th is in the rear case housing and not the main tranny case housing, BUT might be a serious PITA as there was internals design changes in 99, AND their bearings or races might be incompatible with my 95 5th's soecs.... SOOOO, I think I'm going to end up staying with OB 5th, and not going 75 MPH.

I guess worse things could happen.
