New to modifying....where to start?

I've never really done much on my cars, usually leaving them stock. But now, I think I'd like to do some work to increase looks and some minor performance upgrades. I have a 1993 Legacy, L series, with Automatic Transmission. I'm not really sure where to start, are there modifications that are best done earlier than later? I'm planning to repaint the car, add slightly larger wheels and better tires (all season since I'd rather not have to swap out when it snows here) and some basic power bolt ons like air intake and exhaust. I'll probably want to change brakes to something other than stock as well. I don't really know where to start, do i just pick something and go with it? What would you fine folks of SL-I suggest as a good introductory modification?

Get a manifold!

All the basic mods are the easiest and cheapest to do... get a better flowing axleback on to get you some rumble, add some new suspension to get a little drop and tighten up the rear end with a strut brace and a rear sway bar. Add some refreshing 16" or 17" wheels and some nice tires.

I do however recommend some decent snow-tires on the original set of wheels.

Suspension/steering

Intake/Exhaust.

To be honest, the best thing would be an engine swap. But something more realistic would be a 5 spd swap.
