I'm about to buy a Goerlich cat, since my primary cat has failed. Should I also replace the secondary cat as well, or just the primary?
Also going to install an O2 spacer to hopefully fend off any further CEL problems.

do you have the rear o2 behind the second cat (federal) or behind the first cat (cali) i wouldnt bother replacing the rear cat unless you have a federal car and the primary torn the honeycomb in the second cat..

I haven't been able to look into the second cat, but I also want a few more HP out of it, and that second cat is a restriction.
I've got the second O2 directly behind the primary cat.

You can go single cat. You'll have to put a spacer on the rear 02 though if you aren't getting that p0420 code already...

I've got an O2 sensor spacer coming.
I can't run just one cat, state laws and all. >_<
I hate California laws.

I'm not even in California, either. I've asked shops if they'll let me ditch the second cat, and none of them will. I'm pretty sure that they all want to keep their licenses.

I have no welding skills, nor do I have welding equipment.

Take it to a shop and ask them to make you a "track only" pipe with a hi-flow cat installed.
Do the install yourself.

One of my cats died the other day. It was pretty old, but I do still have two more. Man she was 22 years old. :-(

Good idea. But then, I still wouldn't be able to pass I&M when it comes time to get new tags.
I think I'm going to have a shop put the two cats infront of the rear O2 sensor, since that will give me a better chance, along with the spacer, to avoid P0420's in the future.
