I have an exhaust leak in my 1999 Legacy Outback. Do LO owners recommend having the dealer repair the exhaust or buying non-Subaru components and having a trusted mechanic install them? If the latter, what are the best values (performance consistent with economy) in aftermarket exhaust systems?

What part is leaking? you could just buy the part yourself and install it.. its not too hard.

^^ Yup, knowing where the leak is coming from will determine the answer. If it is a gasket I would just go to AutoZone and get the proper one and install it yourself in your driveway. It is not difficult at all and we could talk you through the steps easily. Get under your car and pinpoint the location of the leak and tell us what it is.

if you get under the car while it is running it is easier to tell were it is coming from, if not you should have a dark spot were it i leaking.

How bad is the leak? If it's small use black RTV sealant.

Thanks for the good suggestions. I am a bit old to slide under the car (I think), but my neighbor has a lift. I will give it a shot.
