Any commercial carrier can take, but you won't find UPS or Fedex being very happy about it.

A friend of mine did ship an engine via Fedex, but he broke it down into parts.

Heavy items like an engine, you will need to mount the engine onto a pallet and strap it down. Then, for added protection I would make a boxover the engine with padding. By putting it on a pallet, the freight company will be able to use a pallet jack or fork lift. Any freight forwarder will take the motor as long as all the oil is drained and it doesn't leak any fluids.

If you were doing it yourself in a pick up or van, use an old tire to rest the motor in/on and use a bunch of tie downs.

I used to work for a freighting company. When we shipped out engines we put them on a tire on a pallet. Strap it down and shrink wrap the shit out of it.

UPS & Fed-X have freight service, but I bet you could find a better deal. In the 48 states you have plenty of choices, let your fingers do the walking. Not sure on international.
