Mitsubish makes them as well. Radios, A/C, Heaters, the works. Before Mitsubishi took over, they were made by Daihatsu. My dad uses them at work for utility vehicles.

That's as fast as I drive to work most days... ok in some places I hit 40mph.
But I only live 3.8 miles away. During the winter I spend most of my time in 2nd gear, going slideways. :lol:

What about registering it, say for daily driving duties (I'm just saying)? It would be considered a gray-market car, right?
I guess you would have to go about it the same way as any other oversea import.

These are all different makes/models. The US imports a number of them under special rules for places like military bases and large industrial areas. They simply purchase the new ones approved for import. Kinda rotates.

I owned a Mitsubishi Minicab van for awhile (my Beach Cruiser), inlaws had a Daihatsu Atrai, now they have a Suzuki Every. They all look similar but are very different when you look at the internals. They all can go 65 mph and are highway legal in Japan. Steering gets spooky around 70..... 550 or 600cc, light weight, and a flat face (poor aerodynamics) makes for a hard run on the highway.

Anyone see the crap trucks from China that are badged Tiger and purport to be an American product? Total ripoff of the Atrai but with inferior construction. I think they do 'final' assembly here in the US, with 100% Chinese parts.

The Subaru Sambar of this van type was 1000cc - engine mounted in the rear. I don't know if it was AWD, but I would not be surprised. Maybe some folks in Japan right now can peek at one and comment.

There is a guy with an OLD Daihatsu that is CA legal (don't know how) that I have seen around San Diego, has some company sticker on the side but it is vintage and looks clean. I think his license plate is like 'U LAUGHD' or something like that. I will try to get a pic if I see it parked.
