Yeah, so I didn't like the bars...

Updated (11/6)
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2005/10/FrontNew-1.jpg

Total Bar removal, and put up black mesh behind it. I'm going to do another layer of mesh, and then I want to repaint the grille trim...

My question is: What Color? (new poll)[/b]

gloss or semigloss black! I think matching it to the body just looks weird, although not as bad on dark coloured cars

You mean color matching the grille like on the B4s?

keep in mind that my OB is a two-tone setup, and colormatching to the blue would look awkward...I'm sort of considering colormatching to the tan/silver bumper though...

Nothing is final, I'm open to suggestions :)

STi pink.

no kidding, look at the picture

Its a slightly darker grey, that doesn't seem to match anything, except maybe the faded side trim :x

I'm all about
MATTE BLACK
IMO the silver chrome stuff sucks, (in a can!)
doing it the TAN would be a nice ascent color.
ya, I don't know if I'm going to paint my grill body color or not.
If you do it blue, it would blend well!!!!! (that B4 looks good!)

Maybe a silverish to match your headlights? I still think black, it would match your bug deflector

I like the chrome on my grill (it joins the headlights), but I agree with phi11, the chrome spray stuff sucks.

Yeah I have a can I used on the fluid caps, and it sucked. And it smells too, that's got to be so bad for your health, I had such a headache. Made me nostalgic for taking a big whiff of regular aerosol :smt078

So you haven't updated this yet with any new pics. Did you dremel that stuff out, or how did you get your cuts so smooth? I want to gut my grill and put a black mesh in, but I am afraid of cutting the grill and getting horrible, irreversible results. I imagine after cutting it, I could do a layer of bondo to smooth it out, but again, I'm lazy and wondering how you did it.

I have to say we tried a total everything removal from my buddies WRX and we totally Fed it up. Looked awful, probably because we arent good with bondo. 70 bucks and a body shop remedied the situation and it looks like it came out of the factory that way now.

Moral of the story.... Give it a shot! You can always pay someone else to fix your mistakes haha.

the insert in the grill has tabs on the back. there are little locking rings on these tabs. cut off the rings insert falls out. if you dont like in go to a dealer or parts store and buy new clips. their real cheap. you only have to cut the emblem out and put that section back on.

I just saw those tabs, the grill looks like an easy mod, wonder why more don't do something about it??? I found my grill insert. Its trash, but it should work...

And by trash, I mean its from a mesh trash can I've been eyeing at work. Black wiring, and pretty strong. It also hasa more diamond pattern compared to the gutter gaurd mesh most use. I'll probably attempt this in the next two weeks. I now am going to have to wonder if I should dechrome the grill.

That's what I did except I cut the emblem holder off of the bars and smoothed it out (haven't bondo'd it to get it perfect yet, its still a little rough).

As for the rest of the grille...haven't had time with school and running, so I'll probably finish it next week.

Mark, I just did the mod myself, however, mine has chrome around it. Behind the grill were several posts and a central post that held the emblem in place, they are all silver. You can see them through the mesh, I intend to paint them black, and was wondering if thats what you did?

Your grill material looks alot darker than mine. I just used a mesh trash can and chopped it apart, what did you use?

Based on pics, Mark looks to have completely removed the horizontal bars.

Mark - I would paint it flat black - or low gloss.

Yeah, that plastic piece is just clipped in with some push nuts. I broke all my pegs off and installed mesh, like him, but there are some things that held on the plastic horizontal bars that you can see through my mesh. I was curious if he cut that off, or if he simply painted those pieces.

I took some fine artist's modeling mesh and relayered it (about 5 layers) on the back part of the grille, and then painted it primer.

I like what you've done ! Great work!!!

I'm getting a new grille as well.

I have dilema....Which one.....My choices are :

'03 legacy grille with "honeycomb pattern" + subaru stars badge or

a Legacy aftermarket B4 grille (as posted above). Painted semi gloss black is my colour of choice. Anyone have experience with the B4 aftermarket grille?

What do you all think?

Here's the outback with the EREBUNI Legacy grille(cheaply made that's why it's gettin replaced , although I loved the look!!!) Note this pic was taken last May after wheelin abit at the rally-x opener! Here's the '03 legacy grille I'm going with and will paint the outside chrome semi gloss black.

flat black or matte silver.
i have mine painted flat black, my car's maroon. It might make the front look odd, and too dark, but some matte silver could be the right way to go.
I'll post some pix later.

well, i decided.

I might be getting a 96-99 OB bumper used, and I want to paint the entire thing tan (the 99 limited had an entirely tan bumper, it's hot) as well as the grille. I think it would flow well :D

What I really like about the monotone bumper is that it looks agressive and somewhat upscale at the same time :)

Philip, yours is monotone? You painted it to your bodycolor, right?

yup, it was one color. (that color^^^)
from a '99 OB,
(fyi ,I payed around $70-80 for the bumper,
no bumper beam, no fog lights, and wasn't
paint ready)

kind-of, it's black like my GT side skirts!!

How was the installation Philip? You didn't need to get an outback bumper beam did you?

Install was like 1 hour to get the old bumper off,
1 hour to put the new one on, (wiring was done before)
1 hour to have a beer.

no on the bumper beam, but you may need top shave
some foam off. It is a tight fit, but works.

I changed my grille from an Erebuni grille to an '03 legacy grille and painted it Goshawk black pearl(blue/black metallic). Then removed and installed my old subaru stars badge from my original '03 outback grille.

I will post better close up pics when the weather permits.
