How exactly does the shift boot attach to the shift knob? I bought a new stock knob, and a new stock boot. The knob has a little plastic piece sticking out of the bottom of it with a little lip and a knotch on it. then the stock boot has what seems to be a hard plastic piece sew into the top of it.

How do I attach these, and how does the one that is in my car at the moment come apart?

Unscrew the plastic trim

Unscrew the stock knob by hand

Pull the boot off

The ring at the top of the boot sits on the shifter rod and is held in by the pressure of the knob.

I unscrewed my stock knob for about 20 minutes before i finally realized that it was held onto the boot. It just pops on/off with a bit of pressure.
