cheapest on ebay
20 mins because i had to walk to the next door exhaust shop to borrow a 2x4 to seat the ball joint on the bottom.
Shift's awesome but i am having more diffuclty with the side to side play time to replace a bushing or 4
looks stock bc i am using the stock boot and knob but as requested

I'd suggest a counterweighted shift knob for the best feel to go along with that. Makes shifting a lot smoother.

Well what I use is the greddy counterweight shifter, and I love the feel of it.
http://greddy.com/products/display/?Cat ... ategory=62 (http://greddy.com/products/display/?Category=accessories&SubCategory=62)
A warning though, is that a metal knob like this will burn your hand in the summer and freeze it in the winter. It's almost not worth it but it works very very well. Kind of expensive, but I got it for free. :D
I actually don't have a short shifter on my car, though. The knob I have came from my brother's old toyota supra that had one. That thing was quite a bish to shift before that knob.

09-02-2008, 03:21 PM
sorry man... the WRX muffler isnt a direct bolt on... I just tried to put one on a couple days ago... To make it work you need to cut off the piping from your OEM axel back and weld it on the WRX muffler, the WRX muffler piping is about 5inchs to short.

HA HA HA yes it was me, the only issue i have is the front licence area the bolt holes were to far apart for my WVU licence plateand i when i started dirlling the acrillic of the plate it cracked :( but the bumper and fogs are in. pics to come later
had some issues with wiring the foglights in.
i am running a relay so i didn't tax the switch or any of the accessories in side the car
i first tried running a line from the postive side of the accessory port to the switch then to the relay and from the relay to a ground, when ever i did this the voltage would drop at the relay and the engine fans would come on.
so i gave up on that i spliced the outer fog lights to the low beams, 2A each not that much of a draw on the stock wireing
then ran a line from the battery to the switch and from the switch to the relay, so now i have projector fogs that will com on whenever i hit the switch
also i cleaned up the inside of the wrx muffler taking to the exhuast shop to be welded shut and mounted :D
pics and sound clip to come later

Not so... but you should just in case. There is industrial grade adhesive that you can use to mount the skirts - I did that with my fiberglass ones on my Impreza. No issues with them holding on.
I happen to have some side skirts and a rear GT bumper if you're interested.
(bidding war? LOL)

I have been very annoyed by my lights (interior and exterior) dimming a good bit when my car is idling, I ran across the "Big 3" on nasioc and decided to try it out to see if i could lessen/eliminate my problem. Well i broke out the multimeter to see if there was a change with the last component installed. results were as follows
http://img835.imageshack.us/img835/6071/chartbn.png (http://img835.imageshack.us/i/chartbn.png/)
the battery only didn't change so its only listed once (didn't expect it too ether)
the Big 3 consists of:
1. Additional Engine to Chassis ground wire(s)
2. Additional Chassis to Negative battery terminal wire(s)
3. Additional Alternator to Positive battery terminal wire
The ground kit i made really heavily hit on points 1 and 2 but i completely ignored number three as it never crossed my mind.
I used the "ground" wire from my amp wiring kit that i used to make my ground kit from because it was a different color

Hurray! Got lots of stuff done
I've managed to install the 18mm Rear sway bar from the outback and the results are very subtle, as in you dont notice that the car was different before, it just feels like you taking corners a lot slower the car stays incredibly flat unles you are really hammering it, and even then it doesn't have as much body roll.
http://img266.imageshack.us/img266/930/susrsb.jpg (http://img266.imageshack.us/i/susrsb.jpg/)
the GT front rotors + 2 pot calipers are on and have been bled, not as much of an improvement as i was expecting. The nose of the car seems to take a bigger dive when i slam on the brakes and the stopping distance seems to have decreased a little bit.

I have WRX front calipers..... they look like my GT calipers. I would go with the cheaper of the two.
Unless you're taking your car to the track frequently, don't even bother with 2 piece rotors. The best rotors on a DD are the cheapest rotors you can find (in my opinion). Look into Brembo blanks, Hawk HPS pads and ATE fluid. This is a very, very inexpensive upgrade and will do your brakes wonders. Another addition would be the SS lines which you can get from Reason for another $100.
I'd personally stick to the GT two pot calipers if I were you. All you'd be doing by getting WRX ones would be stepping the rotors up in size for slightly more heat capacity at the expense of more unsprung weight and the inability to have <16" wheels.
Back brakes - the infamous H6 upgrade. You'd be surprised at how much upgrading the rears makes the front brakes more efficient. IIRC, your car might have drum brakes in the rear, so any disc upgrade wouldn't be a bad idea at all.
Anyways...nice ride!

The pitching motion is due to worn suspension not keeping up with the new braking ability. I suffered the same thing when I upgraded to new rotors and Hawk HPS pads.
Don't bother going to WRX brakes - you'll only increase rotor size AND weight. If anything look into the H6 rear brake upgrade, SS lines, better pads and Superblue fluid.
You should also consider improving your struts and springs as when you jam on the brakes your whole car will pitch forward and back if the brakes and tires pull you up fast.

Just so you wont be disappointed when they get here, the center section doesnt fit 100 percent on the USDM cars. Well, its 'fits', bolts in just fine, just the contour lines around the indention where the license plate does dont line up to the JDM one. The jdm version doesnt have a wide enough reverse light section.

it was the side fogs were spliced into the low beam ground on the usdm lights worked on the stock ligths not with the jdm ones i dunno anyway, move it to the common power wire and voila the headligths work like there supposed to:
city lights - on with high beam
projector lights- low beam only
high beam lights - high beam only
side fogs - on with headlights
projector fogs - on with parking lights + switch
the ETA on the tail lights is 2/12

painting your brakes the right way without needing to bleed them later:
clean off the caliper and mask off area and hang the caliper from the spring, remove the rotor so it doesn't get in the way.

Scored on ebay for $20 shipped, It catches any oil vapor that normally make it into the intake and gunk up the valves and lower the octane rating of the gas that i am burning, With my average commute so far being around 75 miles for work i felt this would help out.

I noticed that in my last autox my brakes were hot after each run, ie they stunk, badly (not clutch smell luckily) i know going over to the wrx rotors/brackets would add a bit of un-sprung weight to each side but how much better of would i be for heat capacity?
i know the 350-ish hp (owners guess, hasn't been dyno but it went like stink) celica was having break heat problems too ( two piece rotors up front )

Actually they're not cheapo. I dug out my old records and they're Subaru OEM. Not the most amazing for autox but not "cheap". LOL.
They're already vented rotors, but Hawk HPS pads are a nice upgrade. They don't take long to heat up (important for daily drivers and autoxers).
You may want to look at the H6 rear brake upgrade. That'll move some of the brake bias to the rear with more heat dissipation...also consider that you may simply need to adjust your braking style or refine it... if a trained driver took a run in your car they'd probably shave several seconds off without the need for hardware upgrades.
I know I brake late and too hard most of the time.

got it installed today the exhaust shop guy was amazed at the rumble form the flat 4 :D i am loving it so far but the odd thing is when off the gas and decelerating there is a nasty rattle under my feet, only when the exhaust warms up.
i noticed a hard connection between the exhaust and the car body,
http://img4.imageshack.us/img4/169/solidhanger.jpg
i am going to cut it out ( there is another hanger right behind it that is rubber ) and hope it gets rid of the rattle in the fsm it says that this is for supporting the "middle pipe" the one with the cats, but my cats are gone and a high flow is welded in place so no real need for support there

It's not the hard connection. The hard connection attaches to the transmission and I wasn't able to use mine after swapping mine out. It doesn't make a difference, it's all still mounted fine. However my rattle is WORSE. The rattling you're hearing is the heat shield on the header / exhaust manifold. The little tack welds have broken. Don't bother taking off that hanger. Rip off your heat shield or have a shop re-tack it in place.
Grafton
10-29-2009, 05:15 AM
lol if i had any heat shields on the exhaust i would gladly get rid of them, i had the stock heat shields removed of because they rattled.

edit: not a heat shield mounted to the exhaust, it was the heat shield mounted under the fuel tank. bent it out from the flange no more rattle yay

Hey Grafton First off Love love love how your legacy is comming along!!! keep up the good work!!
Second I'm running upgraded brakes on my BD I got them from crossworth (i think it's the name) and they were wrx slotted rotors. So now I have the bigger rotors and plus to dissipate the heat is where the slotted part comes in. Of course i have the wrx mounting brackets and calipers and all that good stuff. Under heavy braking totally noticeable difference. I find my braking before corners later when going aggressive.
ps. I'm running my snowflakes and they work fit perfectly

Where the hell did you find all that torque? And with a nearly stock intake? I wonder how it would be if you reinstalled the snorkus and did a hybrid intake (http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1471819) instead (that's what I'm planning on).
Do you feel the exhaust work made most of the difference? I guess it would have to.
The torque curve still blows me away. Why do you think torque improved so much more than power?
Only mods effecting power to the wheels seem to be:
-Resonator Mod/fender plug
-Group A Lightweight Crank Pulley
-Custom Built 2" Headers
-Magnaflow High Flow Cat
-Vibrant Preformance Streetpower Muffler #1034
-Big 3/Grounding Kit
Anything not in that list?

this is what i did to my resonator:
http://img4.imageshack.us/img4/4848/moddedsnorkel.jpg
i cut along the red line and removed what i highlighted in yellow, then installed a fender plug so the intake still has to pull through the snorkel but has to pull air from the fender not the engine bay, also i am running a sort of "Hybrid" intake i got the stock section from a 95 legacy that goes between the maf and TB much smoother than the 97 one and it lets me run the JDM splitter too
the only other thing was i was rest my computer before the 8 hours up to CT so it could learn on 89 octane gas ( i know there is no extra power in high octane only better knock Resistance)
i did see a record 31.3 mpg on the second tank on the way up, but cost difference makes any mpg gain worthless
Reason:
from the cars101.com site:
97 legacy gt 10.9in front rotor
02 WRX 11.4in front rotor
they do use the same calipers though go figure,
i wonder how much better a .5 in larger rotor holds heat and how much more it weighs?

So you got the intake that doesn't have the torque box? I actually have one I was going to hook up for the same reason. What you've done with your snorkus is more or less what the 1990-1994 Legacies had, intake right behind the light. I've read that getting the intake feed duct and adjusting the forward hood molding to accommodate it makes a big difference in intake temperatures, plus it's in a higher pressure area, I'm going to be looking for one.
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2009/11/0307_03z2004_subaru_wrxengine_view-1.jpg
Another thing I'm very curious about is your choice of gas. Is there some kind of advantage to letting the ECU learn on higher octane?

correct no torque box
i've never seen a 90-94 snorkel but yeah intake is behind the headlight, wouldn't mind the cai like in the pic you posted but i am happy with what i have,
as for the gas it was a complete shot in the dark, the car uses 87 normally that's what the book calls for, the 89 was just just bc i knew it was going to ran really hard and wanted aome better knock restence, its possible that the ignition timing got advance a bit further due to the ecu learning on the 89 but i dont really know without re-dynoing on 87 then again on 89

Oh, I might as well fill you in on what else I had planned. With that intake part from the 95 Legacy, the only restriction is that ribbed section, so here's what I plan on doing. I have some roofing aluminum that comes in rolls, it's really cheap, thin, sheet aluminum. I was thinking of putting a tube of it in the intake inside of the ribs, with nothing to hold it in place but the tension of it trying to unravel. The edges of it may cause a little turbulence, but I imagine that'd be way less than the ribbed portion. Can't wait to try it.

IN MAX FLOW @ MAX LIFT
EJ25 SOHC: 240 CFM @ 0.375" Lift
EJ22T SOHC: 193 CFM @ 0.350" Lift
GM LS1: 231 CFM @ 0.500" Lift
EX MAX FLOW @ MAX LIFT
EJ25 SOHC: 182 CFM @ 0.310" Lift
EJ22T SOHC: 147 CFM @ 0.350" Lift
GM LS1: 193 CFM @ 0.500" Lift
the ej22e has 1mm bigger valves than the ej22t so they flow should be a little better
*Will make my own parallel fuel rails
**redesigned in 97 for better flow
***possibly bigger valves in the single port heads = better flow, if they are the same size not going to switch
****97 has solid valve adjusters, Subaru did this to reduce valve train resistance, i will too
Any suggestions?
btw what is with the coolant pass though on the 95 IAC? very odd...

Do you have strut braces? They certainly help too. eBay units did a noticeable job for me in my old BC, front and rear. As I'm sure you know, you'd want a GC front bar and a GD rear bar. Just like the swaybar, having just the rear leads to oversteer, just the front leads to understeer (and better steering response), and both lead to awesome. Awesomeness.

leaking engine out out the back of the motor
rear diff leaks real slow
needs front brake pads
interior and exterior need cleaned
rust on front fenders and the top corners of the windshield
stock transmission mount is a joke but had to reuse it after i broke a groupn mount

Woah, it's been a while since I've touched this thread
missing details between earlier posts:
The cometic head gaskets were my missing coolant culprit, and I managed to warp the 2.2L heads by overheating them a few times. Heads were milled and new cometics were installed along with a liberal coating of copper gasket spray, the front top hats were replaced with group N parts (badly in need of...)
Just got finished redoing my halfass'd wiring I put in when i added the JDM goodies (head lights, fog lights and side markers) all new wire was installed and the connections were soldered and heat shrunk
http://img580.imageshack.us/img580/2356/rewireingfrontend.jpg (http://img580.imageshack.us/i/rewireingfrontend.jpg/)

http://img854.imageshack.us/img854/7844/partsnedded2.jpg (http://img854.imageshack.us/i/partsnedded2.jpg/)
and today the alarm that was installed by the previous owner finally died, and i got to extract that from the under dash wiring harness

Significant feel in power? How is driveablity and fuel economy?
It feels "right" there is plenty of down low and is doesn't seem to peter out in the higher revs like the 2.2L did. My current estimate on power is from a 0-60 run I did with the wifey running the timer ~6.5 seconds, which nets me in very close to a 2L stock WRX (just slightly slower) '
I can chirp the tires very easily on a launch, where the old 2.2 would need lots of revs and dumping the clutch to do the same.
The power delivery is very smooth so it seems to be just as friendly as the old 2.2L was but it allows me to get out of my own way easier than before. the fuel economy seems to be even more driving style dependent than the 2.2L ever was, but I have hit 29.2MPG on a full highway tank but around town my average is sitting a 21MPG but I'm usually making short ~2 mile trips to work and back and not warming up the engine...
the one time I really opened the taps up I hit 11 mpg :D that was a fun drive.
I am looking into some engine management and adjustable timing belt idlers because i feel like there is some power left that the 2.2L ecu just isn't going to go for and that the cams are just out of perfect alignment due to the thin head gaskets and milled surfaces (from the blown head gasket :/ )
in any case I might ditch the EL headers and use the Moore Performance setup (extremely similar to my UEL header from my 2.2L) if they ever announce pricing

I had the same doubt about the spray, but I haven't found anyone that has had problems with the spray, but plenty that has issues if they didn't spray. Also the ARP head bolts might be over kill, the hybrid isn't going to create the huge cylinder pressures that forced induction does at the higher HP levels. If you want piece of mind grab a new set of stock head bolts they are reusable

I don't really want something ill have to scrape off if I have to go back in there.
I've never heard of using any epoxy or cement when doing any type of gasket.
Was a Honda Technician for 3 years and did plenty of headgaskets and never used anything on them.
We were taught to just have very clean surfaces for the gaskets to mate onto
if you put something like silicone it just allows a high risk for more potential leaks as you are in theory adding 3 gaskets...
