So, my legacy has a full exhaust system on it, and it sounds great... sometimes.... like idleing... sounds great, high rpm's....sounds great...mid range though...its soo raspy... like rice.
Question is. I have a couple exhaust leaks up at the header. Is this what causes the rasp? or is it the muffler ( magnalfow namebrand should sound great....)
also have some kind of aftermarket headers ( unequal still)
and 2 and a quarter pipe all the way back.

do you have any cats or resonators? And you should fix any exhaust leaks you have.

Yes it's the leaks, fix it and you will notice a huge difference. Mine is the same way.

Number one, fix the leaks. Number two, I had a magnaflow on my car for about a week flat...I took it off. It was raspy as hell. I had a ractive Carbon fiber can on it before, and it sounded great, but I wanted a longer more "JDM" looking tip. I ended up ordering a borla turbo muffler and oval tip from Summit and had a shop install it. Sounded MUCH better.

I had a bit a raspiness a while back. I traced the problem to a crack in my header and a number of small exhaust leaks. I always thought I was my muffler, but now that they're fixed it sounds perfect. Fix those and you'll be golden.

when I had my 95 Impreza it started to get a leak right after the 2nd cat but before that round can near the middle of the car.. the funny thing about it in park you could not hear the leak when revving it but when in drive you could.. about a few weeks later it got worst so I could hear it in park and drive

we ended up with this

The subies first mid mounted muffler. My friend said it is the best to get the muffler as close as you can to the motor, and believed that it make the car sound a lot better...and it does.... I'll get some videos up a little later Oh yea...and the total cost? About 100 dollars after buying my friend and his brother lunch...
This is my setup:

Different, for sure, but I like it.

dynomax ultra flo welded....
It rattles against the body a bit, but probably going to buy some stock motor mounts from rockauto, and give em a bit of polyurethane like this guy..

the exhaust sounds fantastic. It's not loud and obnoxious, doesn't have ricer rasp, and still has the boxer tone. I need to get a video up ..
