HIR's looks like good stuff from what I've seen. I think anyone with the dual GT headlight should seriously consider these as an upgrade before going with the HID kits out there...
Nice job :)

'Bout damn time you posted some pics up, haha. Looks really good!
Thanks guys! Always good to hear from some of the nicest BE's around.
Rougeben, yeah the HIR's are incredible for high beams. The light output is unbelievable at night. For low beams though, I don't think they'd be as good as HID's, but they would be a great improvement over OEM. Not to mention 1/3 of the price.
New pics up from today. In case anyone's wondering, they were taken at the local airpark (5 min from my house). I wanted to sneak out on the runway but the gates were closed.

Cameron Park Airport, my friend has a house and a private plane there. The streets are so wide it's a blast driving through there.
I might have to stop by one day and check those 18s out. I'm thinking either gold or white would look best. I've seen the Bradshaw exit sign in some of your pics, I can get there in less than 30min from my house. 15 if there's no traffic  I'll shoot you a pm.
- New tires put on.
- Installed 5000K HID's.
- New pads/rotors.
- Rubber floor mats.
- Other misc. stuff added for winter.

I think the adco is 25mm...the rallitek/IPD is 22mm.
When I had the 22mm front and 22mm rear (both IPD bars) I could rotate the car pretty easily in autox, and this was on azenis mind you. In the dirt the rear end had a tendency to kick out even with the slightest weight transfer (either braking or gas pedal). I don't know how much more oversteer that 25mm front bar will create on top of that...probably good for autox but may not be ideal for street driving...
Def. get the lightened flywheel when you change out the clutch. I <3 my ACT 14lb streetlite.

is the wiring of upgrading from L to GT headlights hard to do?
is the wiring of upgrading from L to GT headlights hard to do?
Can you tie your shoes? ;)
It was a breeze to do, and only took a few minutes. Cut off both connectors, use a test light to label each of the three wires, then reconnect using male/female connectors.
If you get the entire wiring, including the harness from the car, you'll be in better shape because you wont have to cut the other harness off, and you can disconnect your headlights easier. I just used some connectors that can be disconnected and reconnected, which worked fine for me.

looking really good. I like the steering wheel in there. A set of wrx pedals would also set it off nicely I think. Great job.
Thanks for the compliments  I agree on the wrx pedals, those are definitely on the to-do list.
Well, I finally have money to spend on the car again after dropping a good chunk of change into snowboarding equipment and a (ridiculous) speeding ticket. However I'm having a hard time deciding what to spend it on...
- I really want a set of sways to get rid of the hideous body roll and increase cornering ability.
- Struts and springs are on the wish list too, but I don't need struts for a while and don't really want to lower my car until winter's over.
- The wrx wheels are getting a little long in the tooth. I want something gold or silver, 17" and to be able to run 225's on them. I think I've got some ideas, just need to find what I want at the right price.
Stay tuned :smt002

Hey ladies and gents,
Had a little mishap a few weeks ago in the BE and it currently has a zip-tied rear bumper and a trunk that doesn't close all the way  I'm not going to get into details on how it happened, but I can tell you that I was not driving the car when it happened and there were no injuries, so it's all good. No frame damage and the car still drives like new.
Insurance cut me a check for the damage (came close to a total loss, thank god!) and I've decided that I'm getting the entire car painted over. Why? Well, even though my car looks nearly perfect from 5 feet away, up close you can see some nasty clear coat fading, paint scratches, rock chips, door dings, etc. over the past 10 years this car has been driven. The front bumper and hood being the worst. Long story short, my old man has close ties with the owner of a VERY reputable body shop in Placerville, CA who has been in the business 20 years. We made a deal with him that I'll go get all the parts and he'll paint the entire car, fix the damage, and do whatever else he wants me to do for $2500 + an all-inclusive rafting trip (I'm a part-time whitewater rafting guide during the summer). Since there is a little damage on the quarter panel, all other shops wanted $4500 for the whole car not including parts, so I was extremely excited to hear about this.
The plans are:
New OEM rear bumper
New wingless trunk
Baja Turbo Hood
OEM GT side skirts
03/04 Front bumper w/ foglights
All side moldings, door handles, and mirrors color-matched to the car.
Remove the ugly antenna on the roof
Also ordered JDM tails from 5mileimports and the center piece from another member on here.
Car goes in on the 28th. Stay tuned, pics will be up the day it gets done.
Alright now, carry on

Ah, yes, staying the same color. Guess I should have mentioned that  The color (deep sapphire pearl) is actually one of the main reasons I bought the car in the first place. Stays under the radar and looks amazing any time of the day IMO.
Truth be told, I was thinking about getting a Rev.A-C or even a Rev.D bumper, but there are none in the US for sale right now that I know of, and getting a bumper imported from Japan would be ridiculous costwise. The 03-04 bumper allows me to keep the 5mph bumper reinforcement, has projector fogs and can be had anywhere from $100 used to $400 new. Not only that but looks much more aggressive compared to most other bumpers available for this car.
I'm still on the fence about going wingless though. I think with some JDM front/rear lips, a drop, some darker tint, and some bigger wheels I might be able to pull it off quite well. However, the wing really does make the car look a lot sportier/better from behind. I figure if I leave it wingless now though, I can always add on one later. Leaves me plenty of time to go find a SYMS spoiler
And, Trevor, I think you should tell insurance that you found some black paint on your rear bumper, most likely from some jackass who parks in front of you everyday in his Legacy

Man, that's like the 3rd time I've said something vague about someplace local and you've managed to hit it right on the head every single time  Yep, Frank's it is. The guy Jim there has known my dad forever.
Considered the OB bumper, but couldn't quite bring myself to it. The 03/04 bumper to me looks much better in terms of styling (aggressiveness), and the projector fogs are what put it over the top. Good idea though, considering it does look pretty good on Airgne's BE.
BTW - taking your advice on getting my suspension all dialed in before I go all out on wheels. I'm pretty set on the Bilstein/iON combo, and depending on how much camber I get out of it I'll be able to decide how wide of a tire I want to run. I might want to stick to the typical 225/45, or I might want to go crazy with 245/40's on a 17x8.5 wheel. Who knows. All I can say is, keep your garage locked

with the regular struts, I don't really think you can go as wide as a 245. The bottom spring perch on the front would be really close to the tire by then. Something you don't have to worry about with a coilover (though coilovers themselves bring about a different set of issues altogether). The only BE I've seen that ran 245's was JoeT's turbo be and he was on coilovers as well...

Hey, when you grow up in Placerville, you know the place ;)
I'm sure the car is going to come out awesome, everything we've taken for the last 20+ years has come back better than new.
Once you get the suspension set up like you want, we'll mount up a set of 4 and see what kind of space you'll have at your desired height, and go from there, I've got a few (new) sets of 225's, 235's and 245's.

Thanks for the compliments.
Just dropped the car off at the body shop one more time. They're re-doing two side moldings and giving the body one final polish to rid some stubborn swirl marks. No big deal, they just want to make sure it's done right. I'll be picking it up tomorrow afternoon and I can take some more pics.

It's all good. I picked up a set off lgt.com for $110 shipped. Apparently, the 03/04 fogs are the same as 05/06 LGT fogs. A talk with my buddy in the parts department at the dealership noticed the part numbers were the same. I'm still waiting for the bezels to come in so I haven't had a chance to install them yet. :smt023 Lookin good!
I might of missed it in this thread, but a grill and a front lip (I think) would be the finishing touch. Nonetheless, It looks good.
Sorry Brandon, chances of the Outback bumper are slim to none after how much I spent on this 03/04 bumper and fogs.
Thanks Okin. I might have to try rougeben's Home Depot front lip and see what it looks like. Unfortunately no one ever made a front lip for the USDM BE/BH Legacy so we're stuck with DIY. As for the grill, it's either gonna be the JDM L7 or I might start hacking away at my stock one and see if I can make something decent looking
Anyways, the body shop forgot to fill the holes for the rear trunklid where the 'Legacy' badge went so I either have to put it back on or get a different badge. I can get a legit S401 one for $30 or a B4 one for about the same price. I'll just have to wait and see  I'm also trying to get a JDM rear taillight garnish that says 'Subaru' (rather than 'Legacy') to replace the non-tinted USDM one. Looks weird right now with the JDM corners but at least it's better than amber.
Also, my iON springs should be here this week as well as the Bilstein HD's and new top mounts. I can't friggin' wait to lower this car! Pics will definitely be posted once I get it all on. After suspension it's off to Sybir's garage to see what my wheel and tire options are.

Better 'After' pictures will be up soon, I'll try to take some in the same spot as I took the 'Before' pictures. We had a Taurus come in that just had to be placed right next to my car :smt012
The car didn't drop much, 1" at the absolute most due to the springs being paired with the Bils and not GR2s/stock, which is where iON gets there measurements. It's perfect for me as I didn't want a lot of drop to begin with, but I'm still expecting the springs to settle a little bit over the next few months. Overall it's just the way I like it

I can go on and on about how satisfied I am with this suspension setup. Basically, EVERYTHING has been improved. Cornering is just too much fun for me now, body roll is nonexistent, braking has been drastically changed for the better, and somehow the car rides the same, if not better, than it did stock. 5 stars to the Bilsteins, 5 stars to the Group N top hats and 6 out of 5 stars to Jack @ iON Performance for having a great product with outstanding service. All in all, this was $1300 very, very well spent.
And tomorrow I will be trying on Sybirs gold Rota Boosts

i highly doubt that, but im sure its a huge improvment.

This is true.
Did you get the front sway on too?
Nope, not yet. Whiteline for some reason discontinued making BSF14X (22mm front sway) for the BE/BH so I'll have to wait and order the Rallitek 22mm front now.

hold off on your driving impressions until the springs settle. New springs are usually very stiff when you first put them on, give them a few months or so and you'll get their true characteristics. :smt023
Also, I'd keep the boosts, but ditch the crappy tires

those wheels dont look bad, but get some meat on them. anything under a 45 isnt worth it, makes that nice gap that you see in those pics.

damn I have to find a COBB CAI !
you are lucky , cant find them anywhere. great update !
As of 5:51pm Tuesday, July 28th, the Legacy is gone. As in, totaled.
I was driving a road I've driven for over 2 years now, fully aware of it's twists and turns. It was one of my favorite local roads to drive on, until tonight.
Honestly, I wish I could say how it happened, but I can't remember a damned thing about it. I was driving along, going approximately 40-45mph, when I all the sudden lost control of the car and the next thing I knew, I was sideways in a ditch next to an enormous tree. I reached down to find my phone, couldn't find it, and found myself bleeding from the hands, knees and head. The engine was off, the windshield was smashed in, and the driver side door was stuck shut. I crawled out my window which was for some reason open (I had the windows all up prior to the accident) and a lady in a white Chevy Tahoe was on her phone calling 911. I was bleeding all over, but I didn't feel any broken bones and wasn't in excruciating pain. They had me sit down on the side of the road, where I just sat and stared at the car in pieces, smashed to hell. Within seconds, the EMT's had me in an ambulance, and before I knew it I was in the hospital. I checked out OK save for a few scrapes and bruises, so they let me go. My mother drove me home, in tears of course, and this is where I currently am.
This is the road and the turn I lost control on. As you can see, it goes from left to right and back to the left very quickly. Where the red line ends, that green bush looking thing is one of the largest trees in the area, which supposedly is what my car hit before it went into the ditch. According to the lady in the Tahoe, the car slid completely sideways for 50 feet before hitting the tree.

I'm just glad to have walked away from this in one piece. Someone, somewhere was looking out for me, and this is one of those things I'll never forget the rest of my life. As DeadlyDave put it with his Baja (RIP) "You died, so I could live."
RIP Subaru. You meant a lot to me :-(

Dude, I'm sorry. Glad you walked away - the car did what it was supposed to, but I know how hard it is to see that :(
Thanks for all of the support guys.
Well, I'm sore. Real sore. I'm finding bruises that I didn't have before I went to bed last night and I have a couple ugly cuts on my head from smashing into the windshield. I have a 5" gash on my knee and small cuts all over my hands, but alas, no broken bones.
I haven't talked with insurance yet, hopefully today or tomorrow. I did have full coverage on it, so I'm hoping to get at least some money back from it. The hard part is going to be deciding whether to take the money and buy something else or buy the car back and part it out. I had over $6k into it over the past two years and it's a shame I'll never get any of that back. For that reason, I don't believe I'll be getting another Subaru anytime soon. The BE was an amazing vehicle, but I'm going off to Arizona for school in 3 weeks and I'm not sure if I'll even need a car. If anything, it'll be another Jeep, which is what I had before the Legacy.
I'll let you guys know what's going to happen.

+1 for what Huffer said. Experience tells me that you'll probably be hurting for some time (you might have been amped up on adrenaline when you crashed).
This is another example of why I bought a Subaru. Sure, there are other cars out there that look cooler, perform better, and cost less, but the Subarus I grew up looking at were fun, practical, AND SAFE.
Even if you don't buy another one, I'm glad you were in one when this happened. God bless you and your recovery. Take a nap!

+1 on that. i didnt do that after i rolled my car, and i regret it. once agian glad your ok.
should be able to get your money back. shouldnt want to much for the car. i would try to buy it back and get another BE and transfer all the good parts.

Glade to hear you are mostly alright. I'm sorry that all your hard work is gone. Definitely take it easy. After I was rear ended HARD I had so much adrenaline going through my body I didn't notice how messed up my back and neck was. I ended up going through three months of physical therapy and could barely stand up for a week after my wreck.
Cars come and go. Its hard to think about but I'd try and buy back the Legacy and transfer as many parts as possible to another chassis. Best wishes Kyle

Most important part is youre ok, the 3rd gens have proven once again how safe they are, unfortunately it usually means sacrificing one in the process.
Just focus on healing right now, you don't have to decide on cars or anything superfluous right away.

Thanks again everyone for the support. I appreciate it.
Today, I called my employer to tell him I wouldn't be working the rest of the week, including the weekend. That should give me plenty of time to recover. I just slept and ate all day today, that's it.
My sister went up to the yard today to get a look at the car. They wanted to tow it to the wrecking yard tonight but she told them it's best to wait another day to see what I want to do. I'll be getting a ride up there tomorrow to see if it's even worth buying back.
Judging by the pictures she took (camera phone), things aren't looking up for the Subie at all...

How the hell am I still alive?
If you look closely at the windshield in the first picture, you will notice something very disturbing. The airbags didn't even deploy, which caused me to smash my head against the windshield. I had a WRX Momo steering wheel installed...that's one modification I'll never be doing again...
Navi271
07-30-2009, 04:15 AM
wow, how the hell are you alive? a good question, but just be thankful that you are! Looks like the front end was practically untouched. The senors for the airbag are in the front bumper supports tho right? So that could be why they didn't deploy..
I don't understand how you hit the tree from the pictures. it looks like your car was on it's side when the back end hit the tree making the roof collapse into the back seat. almost like you were in "mid-flip" when you hit it. SO glad you or anyone else were NOT in the back seat.
Doesn't look like you could part out much..
Huffer
07-30-2009, 07:40 AM
Airbags didn't deploy because the G sensors are in behind the front bumper bar. They're designed for frontal impact only.
Looks like the car left the road and flipped up on it's side, hitting the tree with the rear deck first and then probably spun you...
sybir
07-30-2009, 10:38 AM
^^^^ What Huffer said. No front impact means the bags won't blow.
Looking at it, you might be surprised - based on the impact, the suspension (at least the springs and struts) are probably ok, and you may be able to swap the stock bits back in since you have complete assemblies, IIRC. The hood looks like it's ok as well - I'd imagine someone here would hop on that if they were relatively local.
Bigger issue is going to be time - you're not going to have time to part it out, and don't want to make your family deal with it. Take all of your recent suspension receipts to insurance, you should be able to get a payout for something that recent in addition to the car value if you can't pull them off (and you'll probably end up with more that way anyways)

Klye...wow man. You are very lucky to walk away from that homie. So sorry to hear but def glad you're still with us
Well, it's been exactly two weeks since the accident and everything is pretty much said and done now. I recovered fine, and I've been driving around a Saturn as a rental car.
I went to see the car the day after my last post and decided it's not worth buying back. The engine is seized, the suspension looked tweaked (there is no way to get to the top mounts without cutting metal - the hood wont unlatch and trunk wont even budge), only 1 wheel is straight and the tow truck driver didn't tow it on a flat bed so the transmission is probably toasted.
Even after giving all my latest receipts to insurance, they valued the car at a little under $6k, which is $1k less than I bought it for a year and a half ago. I had about $4-5k into the car on top of it, so I took a huge loss on this.
Insurance said the car will be going to Copart Auto Salvage, so if anyone is seriously interested in what's left of the car, check their site frequently at http://www.copart.com.
I most likely will not be getting another car anytime soon as I'm going off to school in Flagstaff, Arizona on the 19th and will be living on-campus. I was really hoping to take the Legacy there since they get as much as 20 feet of snow sometimes, as well as the school hosts one of the only SCAA auto-x's in Arizona. I still had huge plans for the car, but to look on the slightly bright side of things, I am going to save a LOT of money by not having to pay for parking, insurance, mods, and so on. After this year, or maybe even this semester, I'm going to start looking at an 05+ LGT. The BE was an amazing car, but there are so many things wrong with it in stock form that I don't want to have to deal with it all of that over again. Maybe after I finish school I'll get another one and fulfill the dream of an EZ30R + 6 speed BE with all the JDM fixings, but until then, I'd really like an 05/06 LGT Limited in RBP or an 07 Spec.B.
Thanks everyone who supported what I did with the Legacy. I sure will miss it, and I really hope no one has to experience ever anything like this.

It was $1500 yesterday, so someone must really want it :smt102
I have no idea how they got it so quick. The date says 8/6/09, barely a week after it even happened and just a few days after I even released it from the yard up here. They didn't mess around getting it down there that's for sure.

The front of the car must be in running condition then?
Unless they did something to fix it, I couldn't even get the car to turn on. The extremely rough landing bashed in the oil pan pretty good, likely damaging some other part(s) of the engine as well.
