Why is it bad for the MAF to be close to the TB? I read that on some thread here and I'm thinking of doing a project which would involve extending the MAF and moving it back in the engine bay.

How close is "close" when you refer to the MAF sensor being placed near the TB? Why are you relocating it back in the engine bay? Typically, the MAF sensor is located after the air cleaner close to the fender well so that an accurate reading of the IAT (intake air temperature) and atmospheric pressure can be obtained from the air mass. The MAF should have a wire that is heated with electric current. If air density increases due to pressure increase or temperature drop, but the air volume remains constant, the denser air will remove more heat from the wire indicating a higher mass airflow. The hot wire responds directly to air density. The air-charge should be close to ambient to provide optimal O2 density. I'm guessing that since the throttle body is located at the top of the engine you would want to keep the incoming air as cool and "clean" as possible by keeping the air cleaner/MAF assembly tucked near the fender well as opposed to the top of the engine where heat tends to rise.
