What weight and how many miles on your car? I use castrol 10w40 and I have 136k on the clock of my GT. The wagon uses the same oil and has 253K.

5w40 Rotella T...
Wait a minute
I was using 5w30 castrol gtx pre-swap. I think going to a 10w30 during the summer (when I was beating on the poor thing) may have prevented it from a spun a bearing :-? :-?

I've had my dealer do it since I bought the car....but now I'm WAY overdue for a change so I'm probably gonna do it myself...I have no clue what brand I'm going to use or what weight. I've looked in all my records and the dealership never put down what they put in.
I use Supertech 10w-30 synthetic...but I'm driving a Chevy these days, not a Subaru.

I use whatever conventional is cheapest...on other cars.
On the subby and the Accord I use semi-synth...5w30 year round for the accord. 10w30 on the subby...Castrol Syntec semi...

I dunno, RP is an overrated oil, at least from the UOA's I've seen of it. It breaks down just as fast, if not faster, than most of the other (cheaper) synthetics. There's better performing oils and for less cost out there.
YMMV :shrugs:

I use Castrol GTX 5/30 year round (SoCal).
I loaned my car to a buddy for a couple of weeks and he put Royal Purple 5/?? in it and then I started dripping oil from my valve covers. I was at 115k miles. I replaced my valve cover gaskets and went back to dino and now have 134k and no leaks.
I buy my oil at Walmart since it is cheap.
Not to thread hijack, but anyone know where to find a spout for the 5 quart jugs? I don't use a funnel with the regular 1 quart bottles but now that I buy the 5 quart size, I keep spilling oil all over.....

yeah ive seen different tests. but what i cant get from them is they test 8 of 10 oil all the same but the other two oil are tested at higher intervals. its just there isnt a unbiased test out there.. but yes RP street oils are overrated. they make a great racing oil. but there street oil is just any other synthetic oil excepts its purple.

mobile 1 10/30 summer. 5/30 winter. also use the mobile 1 108 oil filter. which is TINY
I keep up on these rigorously because I found that my MPG on my maxima would lose 2-3 mpg when i was over my 3000-3500 mile mark

What year Chevy? If it's a 5w30 engine or thinner you could be heading for trouble. If it's a old engine, that's different.
I've been using 5w30 so far. I change my oil about every 2 months because I put on a lot of mileage....Probably closer to every month and a half. I haven't picked a certain oil to use yet.

Mobil One Full Synthetic 5w30. I use the 15,000 mile stuff with an 8,000 mile filter. I usually change my oil about twice a year.

Royal Purple 10w30 summer/5w30 winter. Had switched from Mobil 1 Syn. Same method. Very Happy!
Mobil 1 Synthetic 10W-30. 145k on the car but that's not the original engine

Most auto parts stores have them. I learned the hard way that it's very difficult to pour in a 1 gallon oil jug without spilling a little :) It's only a few pennies more for the 1-quart jugs so I went back to that...
Mobil 1 Synthetic 10w-40 High Mileage.

pennzoil platinum. wear protection on par with royal purple and motul, only 1/3 the price and a longer life.
mobile 1+ oil filter though. strange how a company which makes such mediocre syn oil can make such a mega badass filter.

Amsoil 10w30 in engine. Amsoil 80w110 in tranny and rear diff. 116,xxx miles. im on 8,000 miles now and now change in oil, and it still looks good.

2004 Baja Turbo:
Castrol Syntec Full Synth, I've done 5w-30 and 10w-30. No more than 2 autocrosses and/or 3500 miles between changes.
A friend's early 02 WRX sedan:
"Whatever's cheapest" dino oil, 10w-40. If he can go 3000 miles+ on that with the way he drives and has the car modded, I find it a little silly to spend the cash needed for RP and other synths in a DD NA subaru.

you know whats funny. subaru and most tuners dont recommend synthetic in any engine because there more prone to engine failure.

I usually run AMSoil, but I've run the Platinum before because I can get it through work and we were out of AMS. Both seem good to me.

That's why my buddy keeps the liquid-o-saurus in his WRX. I wouldn't say that the synth is more prone to failure, but I would say that each batch may not be the same as the one that came before. Mobil1 for instance, has had several Quality Control issues in the past.

Yeah, the more important thing to do than what "correct" oil brand to use is to replace the oil regularly at 3-4k (3750miles according to the severe duty schedule in the owners manual).
Of course, with this schedule, it makes using synth kind of a waste of money on a stock subaru...
