View Full Version : Possible air intake noise?
ok, so I got the subaru back from the shop after replacing the brake pads, and the fronts struts. My mechanic is still saying that the whining noise I'm hearing in the front of the engine is just an air intake noise and that there's nothing wrong with the car???? Its an aweful noise...sounds like a cross between a hiss and a whine. Cannot determine where its coming from, but sounds like its coming from the top of the air intake where the cover goes over it......its driving me nuts when I drive it on the road cuz when i'm driving it, especially when i'm goin like 35, i can really hear it, and its embarrasing.

Is it like a droning sound? Did you do anything to the intake. If you delete the "snorkus" in the fender the noise is more profound.
I just bought the car like a month ago and have not done anything to the intake but replace the air filter....it makes what sounds like a whistling or whining noise...not a drone.

The previous post regarding intake noise has some good insight to the hissing noise your hearing. I would consider the intake taking a fresh breath of air healthy
The snorkel is in the fender.

Have you checked your belts? Power steering etc?
Belts are fairly new, can still see the NAPA auto parts labels on them...I was trying to eliminate some things....possibly maybe the alternator bearings or power steering pump, not sure.

those items can certainly make noises... can you run the car on a lift maybe?
Nope, dont have access to one. Guess I will just deal with it for now. Doesn't seem to be causing any problems.

If you deleted your snorkus, put your ear by the passenger wheel well and listen there.
