I just bought a 2004 Legacy 35 Anv. and am new to the Subi world and have learned that the GT has an LSD and different gear ratio...how hard or could it even be done...but what would it take to get the LSD?

The LSD shouldnt be too awfully difficult to swap in, however I have never really looked into it myself. You could call around to junkyards, see if anyone has a GT that has intact axles. Scrounge the diffs, as well as axles and driveshafts if neccessary (although I doubt it). Replace your current diffs. Most likely easier said than done.

if it has a differnt gear ratio, you CANT USE IT. unless you want to drive for 30 seconds then have it break. think about it

Yea I heard it had a different gear ratio...but what if i did a trans plant from the Trany back or would that be to much work for not enough reward...would the LSD be that good to have

Just for a stock LSD...no, not really.

For that much trouble and possible cash, get an aftermarket LSD or torque sensing diff and get it fitted to your diff (take out open, put in new diff and have unit shimed & balanced).

Or for less, get a used OEM LSD and get that one fitted to your stock diff.

Pretty sure I've seen the Rexors do it when doing 6MT swaps and want rear LSD. That or they take the 91-94 Legacy rear end (3.9) and slap it in their car with an added upgraded diff. The 91 turbo model came with a stock 3.9 LSD, which is what I decided to go with. But that 3.9 info helps you not.

Here is an enlightening site: http://wac.addr.com/auto/obs/lsd/lsd.html

What tranny do you have? If 5MT, you should have a 4.111 final drive. You'll either have that or a 4.444. eitherway, according to the link above, you do have options to swap out your rear pumpkin with a correctly ratio'd rear diff. And if you do swap out the rear diff for one that is listed, GET THE MATCHING AXLES. Looks like your choices range from the 00-01 RS (5MT or 4EAT) or the 02-03 WRX w/ a 4EAT.

is your legacy an auto or manual? if its not manual the only swap worthwhile, is a 5 or 6 speed with a factory LSD and not a 3.9 final drive.. haha, but why would you mod your tranny on an 04 car??? thats a waste.

i seen on another fourm and have talked to ppl about it (now i wish i wasnt at work and had links with me) i am looking into this my self, now from what i understand the GT LSD has a 4.11 gear ratio and the non GT having a i do belive 3.88 ratio. Now the carrier is the same between both models, all you have to do is swap out the ring and pinon gear and shim the backlash and you have the GT LSD installed in the rear of the car.

if anyone finds a good source for them in canada or northamerica pleas PM me with info as i would like to get one.

[edit] if you dont swap out the rear gears to the stock ones you will blow your center diff.

do NOT forget to think about LSD specific axles. If you're swapping in an LSD, then you will need the LSD pumpkin with the matching axles. Take your R&P out of your stock rear end and install them (shim, balance and lash) into the LSD pumpkin.

That is the proper way to do it.
