How hard would it be to do the wheel bearings myself? I have to replace the rears, and I was thinking of doing it when I did my brakes.

What kind of tools would I need and could I rent them at a place like Advance or Autozone?

i dont know about the rears on our car, but if they are like mine it is the whole hub assy you have to replace. it makes it so much easier to do. i have never used and special tools when i have done them before. just hammer and a pry bar. hehe.

remember that you should also get e-brake shoes. autozone is soon getting royalty rotor's. they are sloted and drilled with lifetime warranty. i read alittle about the company and they soud like they know what they are doing. good luck.

Mark you'll need a press... you could take the bearings and hub to a shop to have them press them in and then you do all the reassembly.

Myself, I will front the money and pay someone to do it as I don't have the time or the tools to do those kinds of jobs.

Dont they sell the bearings already in the assembly? That would allow you to get away with much less tools and dont need a press.

rears are a pain. because of trying to seperate the hub from the lateral bars. the one bolt that runs holding the two lateral bars to the hub is difficult to take out and reinstall and if it breaks its a $30 bolt. so what i do is unbolt the lateral links from the subframe marking the toe before you take them off and undoing them there and then pressing the bearings out. reinstall and get the toe close and get an alinement. or just pay someone to do it for you saves you the hassle of doing it

Okay, I know I should just go to a shop to do it, but do you think it will be really expensive to do? Or does having the press make it pretty simple for a shop. I have no money, but really really need to address this issue before winter.

well a place will charge maybe 1-1.5 hours to do a side and maybe $90 for the bearing (list cost). so @$60hr $150-$180 for a side i would expect to pay

I did mine at work, it was kinda pain in the ass because our shop didn't have all the right tools and pieces for the press.
I suggest just get a shop that knows subarus well or the dealership to take care of it. trust me, you wont like the job you're dealing with....atleast for me anyways :roll:
