Three things have held me back from doing too many mods on my legacy, and those are money, resale value, and practicality as it's a daily driver. While two of those are still in place, in light of my recent fender bender I figure my car's resale value is shot anyways. I got the car back together and for the most part it lines up pretty well so it doesn't look like a wreck, but when you pop the hood you immedietly see the face that I beat the upper radiator support back into position with a hammer. So now I have a car that I'm happy with and I'm sure anybody I tried to sell it to/trade it in to would beat the cars value to a pulp so I might as well do whatever the hell I want to it. It was all I could do to not pull out the AC while I was doing the repair, but by leaving it in I at least found out that the damage didn't break the condensor...

Anyways, just letting loose my little epiphany... it's obvious I'm not going to go pouring tons of cash into a car that has bad body work, but it sure is liberating.

Well you should never consider resale value when modding a car, cause when you mod a car, you're making it yours, and it should be years before letting it go. The money thing never ceases to suck though! Best of luck with what you chose to do with it regardless.

You could always mod it the way you want to mod it. Ten if you don't think you'll get what you want for it resale value wise, you could just part it out and most likely get more money for it that way.

I wouldn't pour money into anything that has bad body work...

That's like trying to add onto a house that has bad frames...if it's got ugly bones, it's always going to be ugly.

That's how it will be with my Explorer. I'm going to drive that thing until it either a.) gets stolen and never found or b.) is so old and worn, that it can't be driven anymore.

But I'm in the same situation as you with my Outback. It's considered "totaled" by the insurance company and anybody can look at it and see that there's issues with it. I'll probably just mod it out the way I want it and drive for the rest of its life.
