Chatterish sound when i press in the clutch.

Yesterday I noticed that when I press in my clutch and release it (not moving, just sitting) there is a chattery sound. It sort of sounds like a spring stretching/compressing or maybe something rubbing on something.

Sorry for the description, thats the best I can come up with.

Anyone maybe have an idea whats going on?

The clutch feels fine to me. not slipping or anything of that nature.

Hmmm...if it doesn't feel any different, that's a tough call. Can you feel any reverberations from the sound in the car?

No not really. I thought it was an exhaust rattle till i was sitting in a drive-thru and could actually pinpoint it was only when i press and release the clutch.

And the car doesn't feel any different when the clutch is let out? How loud is this sound?

Yeah it feels no different. Its pretty loud actually.

yeah i know its not good news. And I know I cant explain it good enough for someone to be able to pick it out id say. i was hoping maybe for something that has had the problem and got it fixed/checked out. could just be my bad description.

i wonder if one of the springs fell out of the clutch disc. and its not damping the clutch grab/release as good

That's what I thought, but I'd think it'd have more of an effect than what's going on.

Is it a clattering type noise? A lot of cars have clutch chatter that is noticeable when you are in neutral, and have clutch engaged and it can be considered normal in a lot of instances. My other car has done it since day 1, but I've never noticed it on the Subaru. If it is something new and very loud then it might be time to consider a new clutch.

I suppose it could be the throw-out (aka release) bearing, however with the clutch engaged there is no load on it. Most of the time when they go bad you will notice it when you disengage the clutch and it loads up the release bearing.

My clutch does the same.. I wouldn't call it chatter but more of a strange whining/whirling .. Same goes with my friends BD GT and my other buddies BK brighton & his GC8 w/ v.5 STi swap.. Same deal.

I only noticed the noise when I drive with the radio off.

It will also do it when i put the car in a gear and begin to take off or release the clutch out a little bit. So its not only when it is in neutral.

If it is your t/o bearing, it's fine to drive it like that. There is a fix, which you should do when you replace the clutch and have the flywheel inspected.

So this kit would replace the throw out bearing? or this just fixes it from going bad? as in I would do it the same time i replace the throwout bearing.

It includes a t/o bearing and the repair - basically the sleeve goes over the snout and prevents the grooving from happening again.

Its common on subaru's...most instances its just annoying, nothing else. The fix works though, I have it on mine. It will reduce if not stop the chattering completely.
