rear diff question

hey guys is there any way that the 4.44 vlsd rear diff will bolt right up to my stock 4.11 rear diff in my 97 legacy gt 5spd. will it mess up the tranny if i just change the rear diff to a 4.44 or am i pretty safe as long as the axle and driveshaft fit.....

any input would be great.

Some Diff 101:

Front diff MUST match Rear diff unless theres a step-up/down

Example: 4.11 -> 1:1 -> 4.11


R160:
-Most subaru's have this
-160mm
-comes in OPEN / VLSD
-ANY axle from any R160 will fit. JDM STi R160 axels are just stronger
-ABS is different on some axels
-

R180:
-Rare GC8 have these
-US spec STi's have these (6MT)
-180mm
-comes in VLSD suretrac
-You need R180 axles + hubs
-You need a custom driveshaft or ends to use this with a 5MT

To answer your questions if you want to keep your 4.11 GT tranny and change to a LSD in the rear you can pickup a fancy JDM WRX 4.11 for cheap from a local importer. Everything will bolt up.

Depending on what you can afford the R180 is the strongest rear diff that you can put in without an extreme race diff.

I am sure you cant afford it or don't need it. But I suggest you toss the clunky LGT 5MT and go with a 00' RS tranny or JDM spec.

well i mean the 01 rs came with a vlsd and it was a 4.11 final drive. and i know someone selling a 4.44 rear diff and i had just never heard anything about their fittment. majority of stuff i found was about the 3.90 final drive diffs and the 4.11 so i figured that a 4.44 might match up to the 4.11 axles and driveshaft. because i have never heard of a third style of drive train from a impreza. the r180 will not match my hubs nad i have to change alot to get there. my tranny is the same as a 98-99 5spd rs which didnt have an lsd. and all i want to change is the rear diff , no axles or hubs or anything else. i am looking for a direct bolt in rear diff which gives me some sort of lsd which i figured the 4.44 would do.

LGT Spec B's also sport the R180 (6spd as well).
