anyone done this? i have seen a lot of engine bays and none of the charcoal canisters are removed. is there a reason for this? i like to clean up as much "useless" stuff in the engine bay as possible. i already moved the horn, i'm glad i dont have abs because i hate that massive actuator taking up all the room, i plan on getting a different coolant overflow and moving that somewhere also.. but for now, has anyone removed the charcoal canister? and if so, any problems yet/at all?
thank you for any replies

I'm not sure what you're talking about. Can you give an illustration?
Yeah, i want a different horn, the 95 horn (dunno if its different for other legacies) is really wimpy :?

My dads Tundra has the sissiest horn ever, and its a truck!
Anyway, isn't the charcol canister in the back of the car?

i suppose i can take that as a no...
the charcoal canister (at least in my 95) is in the engine bay. it's directly to the right of the horn when you are standing at the front of the car looking at the engine. it's a large plastic cylindrical dealy with two vacuum lines coming off the top.
i dont have any pictures, i'm at work right now... if i think of it, i'll post some later.
i removed it in my supra, but i want to make sure you can remove it on these, being obdII and all...
anyone else?
if you want horns, check summitt. they sell hella dual air horns for like $35
iirc, they sound much like a ferrari's horns...

oh, THAT THING! I always wondered what it did? It looks like some emissions control thing that goes into the intake manifold, but I can't quite see where the lines lead...

yep, that's the one, Mark.
it takes the vented air from the fuel tank and filters out the fuel vapors, then recirculates the cleaned air into the engine via a vacuum line.
what you can do with other cars, namely my supra, is take the line coming off the tank, and do either one of two things: take a length of vacuum hose and route the vent line outside the engine bay, or cap it off completely, either in the engine bay, or at the fuel tank, then drill a very small hole in the gas cap, and doing that will vent the pressure. actually, the 2nd is more favorable because the vapors are much farther away from the passenger compartment.
other than that, nobody knows how to remove that lil' guy, eh?

Never been an issue, it performs it's function longer than the life of the car, and it doesn't take up that much room.
Subaru engine bays are ugly anyway. Why fight it? :D

ummm, the tank is supposed to be pressurized, from what I've heard, so I don't think putting a hole in the cap would be a good idea...this probably isn't a viable mod. I'll poke around on the other forums and see if anyone's ever discussed it, but I haven't seen it before...

mark, i wasnt suggesting that be a way to remedy the situation. i'm just gonna leave it anyway. dont worry about it. i believe huffer is right, anyway.
it's just the DD, so i have to stop caring about that type of junk, lol.
just drive it. that's all.
all i need is a tach.

All I need is a working gear for my trip odometer ;)
Then everything is functional :)
Yeah, as long as you don't go experimenting on your DD (let me do that ) But you also want to enjoy it, so you should make it as nice as possible :)

ok, so WHY would you want to do that?
to eliminate a tiny restriction in an otherwise extremely restrictive intake??
I think doing an ebay CAI with something to insulate the heat-conductive metal from hot engine bay heat would be best way to get any sort of discernable advantage.
only advantage beyond intake restriction i can see is if you're a penny pincher to the extreme hoping that they fuel vapors would recondense into usable fuel???
maybe you could vent the unspent fuel out of the top of the hood and set something up to LIGHT IT!
Legacy with flames shooting in the air. sweet. beats those led washer nozzles

Yep, and drilling a hole in the gas cap, or else where that would release the pressure that's supposed to be there will set a CEL on an OBDII vehicle. Just like leaving the gas cap loose........

Not having your DD impounded and not going to jail beats... Well, the opposite. :p
Charcole canisters do serve a function... Older cars, like my friend's 1987 Maxima, sometimes have problems with them... I wouldn't suggest modifying it in any way, the thought of raw fuel leaving the car through anything but the exhaust sounds like a bad idea to me.
If you bypassed it and simply fed it into the intake again, it would kinda gum up the throttle body, right?
i know what supra90turbo is talking about with a cleaned up engine bay. a lot of the vw guys do it. looks nice
unfortunately, subaru engines are pretty damn picky about their vaccum pressures. i think that the canister keeps the circut closed (sort of) and sarra is right about the car throwing a CEL
