I finally got my car back after having my electrical gremlin taken care of (alarm  ) and getting my clutch and mounts replaced  . The guy did NOT disconnect the battery to reset the ECU and drove it the 90 miles to my house up and over the Carson pass and the CEL came on somewhere on the trip up the mountain. I have disconnected the battery for a few to see what happens so wish me luck. The car accelerates a LOT better now and idles lower but is a total night and day difference so for that I am happy. Just wish I was able to drive it back over the mountains myself to listen to the revs.

What was the CEL code? It's usually a good idea to find out the code before trying a reset.

Don't know as I don't have a Scan tool.

So I let the car sit w/o the battery connected for an hour and reconnected it and took her for another spin. No CEL and still hauls arse compared to before. Another good mod  .

Doing my ACT flywheel and Exedy clutch in the next few weeks as well. I'll have to remember to reset the ECU before I go and drive away.
hmm...Carson Pass huh? That's a little too far up the road for me, haha. But I guess that's where the real gold country is. Down here it's just a bunch of crazy people.

Yeah, forgot to tell my mechanic buddy to disconnect the battery after doing the clutch. He repairs cars and doesn't modify them so this was his first Scooby mod  and he liked it (the car that is   ).

What was the CEL code? It's usually a good idea to find out the code before trying a reset. Revisited Tahoe today and stopped by my friends shop and pulled the codes as I had the cell come on AGAIN going over the Carson Pass 7000ft+/- some as it didn't do it at Tahoe itself and nor the 150 miles at 2k feet. The code was Misfire for cylinders 1, 2, and 4. :-?

Some people have reported misfire codes with a lightweight flywheel and lightweight pulley, but I can't recall hearing of one with just a flywheel or just a pulley. Are you feeling a misfire?

Nope. I have the occasional ruff idle but IDK. Reset the ECU and drove it home and went fine over the pass with my heater on "1" and got NO CEL til I got to just under 4k feet and turned my Heater off. Not 15 minutes later my CEL started flashing and I lost count after 10 flashes. Does either Kragen or Napa charge to pull the codes (if they even do) before I reset the ECU? Seems it's only in the upper elevations which I hardly ever travel to but...... :-?

The one i know that does free scans is autozone.

Don't know as I don't have a Scan tool.
You need to get one.

Why would this happen? Less rotational mass on both sides of crank causes a CEL. is this a common thing? I have a lightened crank pulley and want to do flywheel eventually so I'm curious.

Been thinking about that since I also have an issue with my 86 Wagon as well in the higher elevations.

the CEL has to do with the crank sensor and the map sensor.

Theory as it that it's because of the lack of balancing. The stock crank pulley has a harmonic balancer built in (all that rubber stuff) and by removing that, plus lightening the load on the crank, you cause small vibrations that the ecu and sensors read misfires. The NA crank itself isn't balanced well, hence the reason it has to be done in order to run aluminum pistons or to bump the redline very high with the NA crank.
MAYBE, if he had his AC compressor running with the head (defroster, dry heat), it was adding enough weight to the motors rotational mass to keep the vibrations from occuring, but that's just speculation on my part.
