sti engine swap

i recently got a sponsorship on my car and i am planning on buying an sti ej20t version 6 for my car and i am wonderin what kind of work i am in for and how hard the wiring on the car will be all my friends are doubting me and i would really like to prove them wrong and need all the help i can get.and if i need to make any cusom engine mounts for my 90 legacy l that has an ej22.

I think the engine mounts are ok (although you'd want to get STi mounts, the mounting spots are the same).

Gator is currently gathering info for a swap (JDM, if possible, IIRC) you might want to hit him up for info.

also, if you haven't been on Nasioc, sign up and start searching the threads there for info.

Id be worried about hood clearance and such. Wiring will be a bitch. What transmission are you going to use?

the engine i am buying is from jdmsorce.com and it comes with the engine, transmission, ecu, and an uncut wiring harness so i think the transimiision is gonna be the one out of the sti

Since you have the wiring, tranny, and other stuff, that simplifies matters a bit. But you'll still want to get FSMs and stuff.

Supposedly the JDM Ver8 STi engine is supposed to be easier than the USDM STi engine or the USDM WRX engine to swap. So you're in a bit of luck there :)

I forget where (its an online site where you can download the things) but its a 72 hour charge, something not too unreasonable, provided you have a good lack of sleep tolerance and a high speed connection. Wiring Diagrams, specs, everything :)

I believe Gator GT did this download session. He's the one you should be talking to, I'm not all that knowledgable, I just pay attention ;)

You'll have to do some searching on bbs.legacycentral.org to find the wiring and such on your car.

i just cant wait to do this swap cause one of my friends has a 240sx and he so i love with the thing its pitiful he gives way to much credit for what its worth hes always saying he could do a lot more stuff than me for way cheaper anf that may be so but when i get done with this legacy i am gonna have one of the most fastest cars in my town and will be able to keep up with the evos

true enough.

don't knock the 240SX too much, its a nice platform. I drove one, and the word for its acceleration was: effortless. I wasn't even pushing the thing and it was moving more quickly than my lil EJ22 OB ;)

But enough OT talk, PM Gator and ask him for pointers. I think he also put up a lengthy post somewhere else on a thread about swapping, I'll see if I can dig that up.

Clear up:
If you are in fact getting a Ver6, more than likely it is a 5MT. There are rumors of a FEW Ver6 with the 6MT, rare though. The JDM STi 5MT units are strong though, not like the flimsy units here in the states out of the WRX.

Swapping in a USDM WRX is just as difficult as doing a JDM WRX swap. The USDM STi is more difficult due to drive by wire. Plus you need more items specific to the USDM STi.

You may run into clearance issues if you run a TMIC (top mount intercooler) with the BC/BF/BJ hood. Even with the scoop. Although, if you're getting a sponsorship, it may be wise to try to run a FMIC (front mount IC) with it and not worry about the hood clearance. Talk to Huffer, he's from Down Under and those are the boys that really maxxed out the first gen Legacys (Libertys). I've seen plenty of pics with FMIC on first gen Legs.

Congrats on the sponsorship! You may want to get a membership over at NASIOC and probe the conversions forums for people who have done pre-Ver7 swaps. look for 'supermoose'. He's a GC madman. (GC = 93-01 Impreza body style, which is what the Ver6 came in). Ver7 motors started coming in the USDM WRX body style, known as GD/GG.

The other forum you may want to get a membership with is http://www.legacycentral.org/ they tend to cater to 1st and 2nd gen Legacys. Someone may have some FSMs for the 1st gen Legacys for you to borrow or buy. I think they aren't included on the website (techinfo) for the reason that Subaru probably doesn't think its feasible ($$$) to make them into electronic files.

If you were getting a Ver7, you could download wiring diagrams for the 02-03 USDM WRX and its very similar. I downloaded 03 WRX diagrams for the Ver8 I'm looking for (still).

Yea the version 6 is the 5 speed STi tranny. The STi engine over there is the EJ20 too.

My version 6 front clip should get here end of december. Just in time for christmas!
