I swapped a phase 2 ej25 motor out of a 2002 Impreza 2.5 Rs into my 99 legacy outback wagon. I purchased a 1.8 iac sensor from a 97 impreza and the only check engine light is from the missing EGR valve. I used the 99 ecu and harness, but had to solder and heat shrink all 4 injectors to be able to use the 02 injectors. The motor idles like it is only running on two cylinders. We listened to the injectors with a screw driver and it seems that at idle, injector 1 and 4 do not "tick". I borrowed a set of injector noids to test the wiring, and cylinder 1 and 4 only have a dim signal at idle. When you push the throttle, the dim light gets bright. What would cause the two opposite injectors to not work during idle? As soon as the car warms up, it idles rough. Sometimes it runs good, and sometimes it runs with no power, like I only have two cylinders. Were running out of ideas. thanks

First thing, is that you have a real mishmash of parts.

If you were trying to put a Phase 2 SOHC into a vehicle previously equipped for a DOHC with a MAF intake, you're asking the ECU to run a SOHC engine when previously it was looking for a DOHC?

My best guess at your situation is that the ECU isn't capable of running your injectors at the timing that the engine requires to idle correctly. Have you tried an IAC from the 99 Legacy or the 2002 Impreza?

Re-check the codes. I'd bet you have an IAC or other idle related code.

When the PCM cannot control the idle speed with the IAC, it will do it by cutting fuel injectors and retarding the ignition timing. Pretty typical for Japanese cars (ever heard a Honda with the idle going up and down? its because its cutting fuel to keep the idle down.) It'll only do it at idle though, which is why the noid light lights up bright when you rev the engine.

That makes sense. I will run the codes again. I've actually been driving it for some time with only a couple of instances that it will acted up on me. To clarify, I put a phase 2 dohc motor out of a 2002 2.5rs into my phase 1, 2.5 dohc outback wagon. I had a friend a couple of years ago put an early model 1.8 legacy motor into his 98 outback wagon without issues besides a code for the egr. His never acted up though, besides a check engine light which went away after he purchased the 1.8 ecu.
