Im used to having hondas and there were so many different bodys and body styles...you could have the same generation and style as the guy next to you but a different stock engine....in the subie world to me it looks like a 2.2 is a 2.2 and 2.5 is a 2.5 as long as they are the same generation....is there a link to anything explaining body styles or engine modles and how everything works together?

You have it pretty much. The only differences within that would be engine blocks and computer chips/emissions devices. normal legacy's have the 2.2, outbacks have the 2.5, and the 2.5GT, has well,... the 2.5  Earlier models had a 2.2 turbo, and now (2005+) there are 2.5 turbos.

For engine blocks, its mainly the 2.5's, before they fixed the headgasket problem, and after. The 2.2's had a different set of lifters in the earlier years (hydraulic) and the newer ones had spacers for valve tolerances.

You are right in some respects. Subaru engines havent changed too much, and don't vary from model to model within model years from what I know. However, a 2.5l NA engine IS NOT THE SAME as the 2.5l turbo engine, same with the 2.2l. There are other guys who know more about this than me, and theres a thread around somewhere explaining the model codes I think.

90-94 EJ22E Phase I
91-94 SS (turbo) EJ22t
95 All Models EJ22E Phase I
96-98 Brighton, L EJ22E Phase I
96-99 Outback EJ25D Phase I
96-99 GT EJ25D Phase I
99 L EJ22E Phase II
2000-2004 All Models EJ25 Phase II
05-present "i" EJ25 Phase II
05-present GT EJ257 (turbo)

I'm pretty sure that's the breakdown. In 1996, it was a little fuzzy about what model got the 2.2 or the 2.5, but I think I got it right...they discontinued the LS and LSi after 96 and made the the GT and L (and brighton) trims only, IIRC.

And that list is really only applicable to North America/Canda.

There's a much bigger list which is UK, Australia, New Zealand and Japan.

And there's even differences in Australia's market, because they recieved detuned Japanese versions.

Subaru UK liked to release their own "limited edition" models too.

If you never said the word "detuned" on here ever again I think we would all be happy.

That just breaks my heart to hear that word mentioned about JDM roos.

They're not JDM cars though. They're Aussie cars. My bad, I didn't clarify that.

Comparison: NZ STi v6 - 206kw. AUS STi v6 - 192kw
