I have a 1997 Legacy Brighton wagon that I want to put a 2.5 RS engine from a 1999 Impreza RS. I have the complete RS engine (minus alternator and p/s pump) including crossmember. From what i can gather it will bolt in no prob with my tranny (will be rebuilding or replacing it with same). I'm a bit confused on wiring and whether it will plug and play. Also if the ECU will need to be replaced/chipped/tuned.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Do NOT quote me but if I remember right the 99 is a SOHC and MAS sensored and the 97 is a DOHC and MAF. You will need the ECU and engine wire harness from the RS and otherwise will be plug and play, OR you can use the 99 block and your 97 heads and intake and have a better built DOHC 2.5L. The brighton will be sohc 2.2 maf. 99 RS is quite possibly also sohc maf (yes they were made in that configuration).

If that is the case you could probably just plug in the engine harness and have everything 'just work'.

the only thing is i dont think the imprezas share the same ECU pinout as the legacys. but idk time to look at some FSM's

I recall someone on Nasioc testing different ECUs on their GC/GF platform and used a 1998 GT ECU, so I do believe teh pinouts are the same as long as both motors are from the same era and both are MAF.

If the RS motor is a SOHC like the 2.2 one is then you could always just swap longblocks and bolt your 2.2 intake manifold to the 2.5 block. Just be sure to use the 2.5 fuel injectors. I did this on my old Impreza. I had the 1.8 motor and swapped the longblock for a 2.5 SOHC. I used the stock 1.8 ecu and manifold with stock 1.8 sensors and it ran great!

That was OBD 1 though. I don't know if an OBD 2 ecu will throw a code or run funky with this setup.
