What all are the differences drivetrain wise between the two. My mechanic friend has a 97 GT he's working on that is mechanically stock and says it pulls better than my 98 Outback with mods listed in my sig. If I remember right the diff is different between the two (can someone confirm with ratio please) but anything else?

Figured on the weight. What about ECU or anything else?

every subaru ecu is tuned differently. but i would think that they might have a close matching tune. other things different tire/rims(unsprug weight). spring weight(on car)

Speedo calibration is different too, right? Outbacks have 15" wheels while the GTs have 16".

that will only matter if the tires are larger, like over all diameter.
And the overall diameter is different between the GT and Outback. Outback has bigger tires, and that is a factor in the final gearing too, so even though the final drive and 1st-4th are the same, the GT effectively has higher ratios, which explains why it pulls better.

Yeah, 1-4 and the final drive are the same, but what jey is saying is that the overall ratio is also affected by the overall diameter of the tires.

As you can see, the Legacy's effective gearing is slightly lower due to the smaller tires. The Outback has the lower 5th to make it more useful for 'normal' US highway driving.
